Okay. I have a private-invite only blog (along with public ones). I told my readers to register with wordpress and they say they did. Now, several of them have access and a few don’t. I’ve tried to put their email address in the settings–the address they gave me–and wordpress doesn’t seem to accept them. Why might that be?

They say they are registered. They got usernames and gave passwords and such. But I’ll try it again.

When you add users, make sure that you are using the same email address that they signed up for WordPress with. It has to match.

THanks for the help, but Ive checked the email again and again and used a few alternate emails and they are not working. I mean, if they were working they’d show up on that little list, right?

Not necessarily. As Vivian said, you have to invite them using exactly the same email they signed up for WordPress.com with. Maybe you could say to them “I’m inviting you with your email “(email visible only to moderators and staff)” so please go register with WordPress using that email now” or something? And definitely have them check the junk mail folder, as WP emails have a tendency to go there.
