Invites not going through

All day I have gotten ‘Sorry, we couldn’t process your invitations. Please try again later.’ Is there anything I can do.

– If you add one or two at a time, and then try a different one or two, do you see any difference?

Correct amissionaryslife
No difference no matter how i try. I have 3 to invite, tried removing 1 at a time, same message after each try. I tried from 2 devices, tried logging out & back in.

You’re getting that message because you’re trying too frequently to invite those users. It’s an automated throttle to prevent spam.
I’d recommend waiting a day or so to allow that to clear out and you should be able to invite those remaining three accounts again. If you get the same message, do not try them again and updated us here and we’ll look into this further.

Waited more than 24 hours & it still is giving the same message. We haven’t added anyone for a few weeks, so I don’t see how it would think it’s being spammed really?

Actually i just looked & the email addresses that i am getting the error message for are showing as sent & pending. I have had 1 of the people send me an email showing that they also got an error “Sorry, there was an error following … Please try again.”

Out of curiosity, you are inviting people who you know, and who have given you permission to invite them to view the site? I noticed that in the past two years (the limit of our activity logs) you have invited 200+ people to follow this site. Our invite system is not intended for site-promotion at scale, so if your intent is to increase the number of followers to your site I do not recommend this method. Instead I would recommend using a dedicated email marketing solution like Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or MailPoet.
Also, I see you have unaccepted invites going back to the beginning of the month (Oct 8) so if you delete your older invites, does that allow you to send out more invites?

Yes, they request via email to be added. We do not promote or advertise. I send a follow up email telling them they should have gotten the invitation, that’s how i found out they also got error message.
We give the invitations 30 days & then delete them & have had more than these few pending before but never had this problem before. Have been doing this for many years without a problem.
I appreciate you continuing to try to figure it out. I’m particularly concerned about the error message happening but the invitation seeming to still go through! Something doesn’t add up.

We have seen a few reports of this issue with our devs, but we have not discovered the root cause, so there is not an immediate fix I can offer. Other site owners affected by this issue have commented that if they delete pending invitations, they can proceed, and I hope you can confirm this. Are you willing to try?

In that event, I also recommend that you consider adding a subscription block to your site sidebar as a workaround: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/subscribe-block/.
This will allow folks to subscribe to the site without sending out invites. Instead of emailing individuals after you send an invite (to confirm they got it, etc.), you can email them and ask them to visit the site and subscribe in the sidebar. They should be able to do this without issue since direct subscriptions do not use the same system as invites.
Any email address added there will send a confirmation link to the recipient (to confirm the subscription) similar to how invites work.

I deleted all pending invites & resent to 1 of the emails & got the same error message 😮💨 & it’s back in pending again.

My recommendation is to follow @staff-totoro’s suggestion and start using the Subscription block.

If they can’t get to the page, how can they subscribe?
I see that someone without access already has the option to login to request access. So that isn’t the issue, thank you anyway.
We just really need the invitations to work, like they have for all of these years. Thanks!

I apologize for the confusion. We may not have initially recognized that your site was set to private until you mentioned it because we as staff are able to view the site despite it being private (so we don’t see the
site is privatemessage on our end).I see that all pending invites are currently cleared. If possible, next time you attempt to invite several users and receive the message, do not remove the pending invites and post in this thread.
I want to see how it looks on both your end and the user’s end since you’re reporting that you both are receiving an error. As mentioned, the only current workaround that has worked for some is to wait some time, refresh and resend the invite, but I would like to do a bit more digging on both your and the user’s end.

No, sorry, that’s my fault for leaving out that important detail that it’s a private blog. I have invited the 6 that have been waiting, but it only is showing 1 at a time under pending, so i had to submit each separately for some reason. Also, when i invited my other email, even though it says pending, it never sent the invite.

Can you let us know which email that is? You can enter the email and only volunteers and staff will be able to view it. I’d like to investigate and see why you didn’t receive that invite.

I looked in spam also, but have not received the invitation. I did get the wordpress welcome email. -

Hmmm, when we check on our end, we can see that the invite was sent successfully. If there was a delivery issue we would see that as a bounceback or some other failure.
Can you search your inbox for this specific email subject line?
