inviting contributors to my blog

  I set-up a blog a few days ago. Yesterday, I invited friends and family to join the blog, many of whom are not users of wordpress. Initially, I did not indicate that I would like them to be contributors to the blog (i.e., their user role). Now many of them are telling me they are not able to access my site. What can I do from my side to help them access and contribute to my blog? Do I need to change a setting under “Privacy” or “Discussion?” Do I need to change their user role? If so, how do I do this?
