Inviting somebody as a user who does not want their own blog

  Invited somebody as a user, but it made her set up her own blog. Is there a way to sign up new contributors to my blog without them having to start their own?

  Yes, they can select the username only option during sign up. The link is kind of small. It’s just below the username field on the sign up page and it says, “Sign up for just a username.”
