Inviting users with site visibility set to 'Private'

    Hi,

    I’m building a WordPress.com site which I want to be private, until it’s ready to be released to the public. As such, I’ve configured Settings > Reading > Site Visibility to “I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose”.

    I’ve invited a user to Edit the private site via Users > Invite New. The user has received the invitation email, and clicks on the ‘Accept Invitation’ button within the email.

    However, upon clicking the button, the user is forwarded to the WordPress.com login screen, requesting an Email/Username and Password.

    I’ve tried clearing the browser cache, and different browsers, but the user is always forwarded to the login screen.

    It’s possible I’m not understanding how the user invitation functionality should work. Can someone let me know if this is expected behaviour?

    Many thanks in advance.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Your invitees should be WordPress.com users as well to be able to view your private blog.

    Looks like your invitees aren’t WordPress.com users which is why they are taken to the account creation screen.

    Thanks chaitanyamsv. If users click the ‘Register’ link at https://plumtreesangha.wordpress.com, they are taken through a wizard that asks them to choose a Theme, Domain and Pricing Plan.

    The users of my Private site do not want to create a WordPress.com blog themselves. Is there any way of me registering on their behalf, or otherwise allowing them to bypass choosing a Theme, Domain and Pricing Plan?

    Yes, I have a private site as well but with the new registration format it is very confusing. The old WordPress registration format allowed the option for new members to “sign up for just a username”. That option is no longer is available. What do I tell new members to enter in the “domain or keyword” box in the new registration format? Very difficult to keep registration simple for our new members.

    @terencehoad

    I think WordPress.com thinks your invitees want to register a new site and hence is showing the wizard. I can’t recall exact steps as I haven’t seen that wizard in a while but there should be way to skip that wizard.
