inward link wierdness

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I’ve put a link on a website (www.dog-treat.co.uk) to my blogsite (www.dawgblog.co.uk).It’s on three, networked machines, and the link only works on two. On the third the link goes to the 1&1 holding page, as though the site has not resolved from 1&1 nameservers to WordPress nameservers. I’ve cleared cache and history, rebooted and still the third machine won’t recognize the link. (The domain ‘www.dawgblog.co.uk’ resolved about 2 hours ago, 16.30 gmt)

Also on the blogsite I can’t get a second text widget to work. The code just disapears, and any text does too, although the empty text box is on the page.

What code are you trying to add in? Can’t help you unless you tell us as i lost my mindreading licence when Bush stole, I mean won the White House. Please remember to place all code between backticks as stated under the form. The backtick is the key to the left of the ‘1’ key and above the tab key on a standard PC keyboard.

Please take a second and create a postmaster account or a forwarder on the dog-treat.co.uk domain. You are in violation of a number of RFCs without it and it will get your domain blackballed fairly quickly. Very quickly.

The 1and1 and wordpress nameservers would not be talking to one another. The one that comes into play is the ones assigned to your ISP, Zen Internet. (I can see you’re IP address.) Perfect example of this is your two hours to get the domain to resolve. Takes about 5-15 minutes for a *.co.uk domain for a change or a new domain to hit the net.

Now when I look at the record of your main website, I’m only seeing a single A address. It looks like to me that this is the issue. You say your website is on three seperate servers. Well, if that was true, we’d see three seperate A addresses in there. Unless your host is doing some fancy proxying in the background but, if they were, you’d be paying a couple grand for hosting.

    Code is <img src=”http://dawgsblog.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dawspix-button.jpg>

Shoul it be <img src="http://dawgsblog.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dawspix-button.jpg> with backticks?

I’m afraid I don’t understand the second para., so will have to ask advice tomorrow, from local guy.

The nameservers were talking to each other. It was on three networked machines, by which I meant three computers, three pc’s, three boxes on the same network. I’m sorry if I was unclear. The problem was solved by start>run>cmd>ipconfig/flushdns on the one box that was not linking.

If you could point me in the right direction about the postmaster account and forwarder, (not right as in Bush, ho ho), I would be very grateful.

Re. blackballing because of the RFCs. Is this the same as blackballing because of a bad site redirect? A 302 if I remember?

    Thanks for your help.

You’re missing the ending double quote and the trailing slash of that code. Please try this:

    <img src="http://dawgsblog.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/dawspix-button.jpg" />

Black balled as in being listed on rfc-ignorant.org, SPEWS, and other antispam listing sites. Like driving without a driver’s license. You need to talk to your host about that as setting that up depends on what you’re running for a backend for your site.

Glad you got the DNS issue worked out. I didn’t mention the flush as the other domain worked for you after a bit. They should have both been working by then.

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike

    Thanks DrMike,

spoken to my host who says they monitor all mailhost accounts centrally and there are no blackballs listed.

I’m still having trouble with getting an image into the side bar. I’ve put a text widget (no 2) into the sidebar , saved changes, and it appears, (blank, dotted line) on the page. I’ve tried putting in a title and nothing shows: Presentation>sidebarwidgets>text 2> title and text entered>save changes>save changes>wiew site: only that dotted line. I’ve tried the same using , no change, and <a></a> , no change.
I’m trying this without code as I did in fact have the closing /> (apologies), and I just cant seem to get the text two side bar to work. And I can’t edit text box 1. This has happened since I added the domain, (change from http://www.dawgsblog.typepress.com to http://www.dawgblog.co.uk

    Could you help further please?
    Thanks.
    Matthew

*sigh* All I can go is try to help…

Thanks very much for your help.
It seems that the dns cache flush sorted the original problem.
The rfc thing did flummox me, as I said, and I tried to get other info., as I said I would. That other info seems not to contradict yours, but to make it seem less important. My hoster seems to think that by signing up to a mailhost account I would have to deal with loads of spam, which he does automatically on his servers. He was in fact ‘slightly’ more dismissive than that, but I couldn’t really see the point in passing on gratuitous rudeness or posturing.
I did apologize for the code mistake I posted: it would have made no difference as the widgets were down, and I would not have asked for help here if it had worked. It would have worked as I put the correct code into the widget, unfortunately not here.
I’m sorry you seem to feel your time has been wasted by me. Newbs make errors and that is part of the reason forums exist.
    Still, thanks again.
Hopefully we will never cross paths again.

    @dangme:
at the risk of being presumptuous and speaking for DrMike, i think his comment was directed more at your host than at you.

It’s been a rough couple of days on the forum, and DM is a volunteer (as are all the people who post here except those designated by the term “KeyMaster”). Please feel free to continue using the forum for whatever help you may need.

Yes, thanks Judyb. Ungracious of me.
Sorry DrMike, thanks again, and I hope things that end are not too hectic.

dr mike said in his officious tone: Can’t help you unless you tell us as i lost my mindreading licence when Bush stole,I mean won the White House.

I for some reason thought this was a WordPress blog help forum. Seems I upset you by threatening to go back to Blogger a few weeks ago. In fact, you called me rude. But it’s ok for you to post a weak attempt at political humor that has no bearing whatsoever on the problem at hand? Typical liberal.

Ooh err! Bun fight. Lets leave this shall we?
