IP address

    Hi there,
I am trying to change the domain name of my blog to my full name. However, i am currently using my full name on another website so want to merge the two.
I’ve been told I need to add the IP address before i can do this.
Please can this be sent to me? Or can someone tell me where i’d get it from?
    Thanks,
    Marielle

  • Hi there. WordPress.com sites don’t have unique IP addresses. All our sites share a number of addresses, and those addresses change from time to time, so using the IP address for domain mapping is not effective.

To connect a custom domain you already own to your WordPress.com site you need to first purchase the domain mapping upgrade for our WordPress.com site, and then change your domain’s name servers to point to WordPress.com. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ideas#postform

If your domain registrar absolutely must have the IP address, let us know, but realise this is not the best option.

Thank you for getting back to me. Sounds like the IP address is not the best option.

How much is the domain mapping upgrade you speak of? And will it need to be renewed once I purchase it?

    Thanks again!
    Marielle

  • Oops! It appears I gave the wrong link earlier. I meant to include the mapping support doc :)

Mapping costs $13 and needs to be renewed annually.

Thank you. I will try it.

Hi there,I purchased the mapping last night for $13. But I've just spoken to Wix because the steps outlined on the WordPress link wouldnt work, it turns out that Wix.com cannnot change the name server. So the mapping will not work. Can I have a refund on the $13 please?

Instead they advised that I transfer away from wix. To complete the switch to my new registrar (WordPress), I need to use this transfer code: wix-DzHEc7-Gop

Is this something you can help with?

    Thank you.
    Marielle

  • You should be able to request a refund by going to Store ->My Upgrades and cancelling the mapping there. If you have any trouble with that, add “modlook” to the tags area of this thread and wait for a staff member to answer.

That transfer code can’t be used here, as you can’t transfer a domain to WordPress.com, so you’ll need to transfer your domain to a different registrar. You’ll give that code to them so they can complete the transfer for you.

Once you’ve moved the domain you’ll still need the mapping upgrade to connect it to your WordPress.com site, so perhaps you don’t need to cancel it. But if you’d prefer to cancel it and then buy it again once your domain has been moved, that’s fine as well.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I figured out how to request the refund.

Can the transfer code be used on wordpress. org sites? I ask..because I am currently working with a web designer to migrate my site from .com to .org. If not, then I will transfer the domain to a different registrar.

    Thanks again.
    Marielle

  • Sorry for taking so long to respond this time. I went to bed right after my previous answer :)

WordPress.org is a piece of software. If you own your own domain and have a hosting account you can install the WordPress.org software to that domain and use it to build your website.

So, to answer your question, yes and no. You will need to use that code to transfer your domain to the web registrar of your choice. Many registrars simultaneously offer hosting as well, so it might be simplest to transfer your domain to a registrar that will provide hosting for you as well. You can find a list of web hosts that specifically support WordPress.org on the WordPress.org website: https://wordpress.org/hosting/

If you need more help setting up a WordPress.org site you’ll need to post in their forum. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different, and I’m afraid we don’t offer support for WordPress.org sites here.

Hi there – one last question on this. How do I find out where my wordpress blog: britchickny.com is currently hosted?

  • All domains on the internet are included on a database called the WhoIs database. There you can see who owns a domain, who is the domain registrar and who is the domain host. I usually use this site for WhoIs lookups: http://www.whoishostingthis.com/

But in this case, if I click on your domain I see a WordPress.com site (WordPress.com admin bar at the top, WordPress.com link in the footer). That means you are currently hosted by WordPress.com. If I enter your domain into whoishostingthis it also shows you’re hosted by Automattic/WordPress.com: http://www.whoishostingthis.com/?q=britchickny.com

Thank you. I’d now like my wordpress.com blog to be hosted by https://www.1and1.com. When i type in the domain name it asks for an authentication code. I was unsure where to source this from?

  • Remember what I said earlier about WordPress.com and WordPress.org? Your WordPress.COM blog can’t be hosted by someone else. If you want hosting elsewhere you’ll have to set up a WordPress.ORG site, and transfer your content to that site. All the steps you need to follow are outlined here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/view-all/

The authentication code you need is just like the one you got from WIX. You’ll get that when you transfer your domain from the My Domains page in your dashboard. Note that you can also leave your domain registered with WordPress.com if you prefer, but change the name servers so your website is hosted with 1and1. Instructions for both options here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

Note that you also have the option of staff doing this entire process for you if you buy the Guided Transfer upgrade. https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Ah, I see. Thanks so much for your patience! This is all new to me…so forgive my ignorance on the topic.

    Have a great day.

  • No need to apologise :)

    I’m happy to help.

    Hi there,

I recently transferred my blog (britchickny.com) hosted by wordpress.com to a new domain (mariellelegair.com) hosted by wordpress.org.

I would like to remove the old domain (britchickny.com) from the dashboard since I no longer will be using it. Please can you advise how i do this?

    Many thanks,
    Marielle

    Hi Marielle,

Do you want to cancel that domain britchickny.com completely? Please keep in mind that canceling a domain means you give up ownership of that domain name. The domain name may not be released immediately, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to register it again in the future. You should only do this if you’re sure you never want to use that domain name again with any website or blog.

If you’d like to keep the domain and use it somewhere else, you can transfer it instead: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

If you’re sure you don’t want that old domain (britchickny.com) anymore, let me know and I can cancel it for you.

    Hi Rachel,
Thanks for your reply. I am now using the wordpress account for my new blog which is: http://www.mariellelegair.com (run by wordpress.org).

I transferred the content from britchickny.com to the new domain, so I just didnt want to have two blogs, since I will only be updating the new one (mariellelegair.com).

I’d like to get the old domain (britchickny) removed from from my WordPress site/dashboard. Is this possible?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Marielle,

If you want to delete the WordPress.com blog at britchickny.com (since you have a new blog that you’re using now), you’ll first need to cancel that domain britchickny.com or transfer it to a new domain registrar. Once the domain is canceled or moved, you can permanently delete the WordPress.com blog and that will remove it from your dashboard.

Do you want to cancel the domain britchickny.com?
