IP Address published

I’ve found on my blog something very “fishy” and I don’t think I’m dumb..but I do feel now! After founding a comment left with my ava…which I obviously didn’t leave on my own blog!…I investigated more and spent about more than an hour looking through comments left the last couple of months. I found one blogger’s IP-address exactly the same as about 9 others!! So am I right by thinking what I’m thinking!!?? How else is that possible that about 9 people all over the country, have the same IP…! This is really scary! And, those very same 9 people’s IP’s were not the same in the beginning…only later on when visiting my blog too…their IP’s have changed to the same as one other particular blogger!

Also, for safety and security…can WP not hide the IP’s from any blogger having access to his/her dashboard. I do have Norton Security installed on my PC, but I don’t feel like commenting on other people’s blogs anymore!

maybe all those people are really just one person using different usernames.

  • Unknown's avatar

That is definitely the more likely case. How do you know they weren’t same at the beginning? Did you check before?

It’s rather difficult to change an IP address, and I doubt 9 different people would go and change their address to the same one; that’s a conspiracy, not a coincidence.

And wordpress doesn’t hide IP addresses from a blogger in their dashboard, does it? All my comments have IPs.

Unless they browse anonymously or use an anonymous proxy I think.

I found the fishy post last night and then investigated and spent more than an hour looking through “comments” (not “my comments”) and then saw the IP’s…and went through all the pages for the past 8 months!! and then discovered that those 8-10 bloggers’ IP’s were not having the IP’s they had in the beginning…only discovered the “problem” with 2 and then looked at more and then saw there were even more!!

Lizii…you’re right, WP does not hide your IP! and they should hide it…in some way!

  • Unknown's avatar

So you want people to hide your IP?

You have to realise that other people on a blog can’t see your IP when you comment; only the owner of the blog can. I’m sure that’s recorded for safety purposes or something like that.

I don’t really understand your problem, though; people probably didn’t change their IP address to someone else’s IP address – have you considered that they know each other and were just sharing a computer or something?

Also, unless they’re posting offensive comments, or something that disturbs you, why does it matter?

    hi lizii

No, nothing bothers me, it’s just the fact that people can (if they want to) hack you if they want to! and if you are not protected with a firewall or anything else. Luckily, no bad comments left so far on my blog! but if you’re IP is available, that can be a security issue..if the person who’s blog it is can’t be trusted and you don’t know them in person really.

Having the same IP as a different person is dead common. Everyone using AOL has one of a handful of IPs, and they all trace to the same city. And a person can’t hack you just because they have your IP address.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmm… I guess so. But then again, people are making the same risk by commenting on your blog, right? :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    What risk? That’s my point.

  • Unknown's avatar

How is it possible that a person 800 km away from another person has the same IP-address…

    Hi lizii

yes, people do take the risk on every site, on yours… mine…whoevers… :) but is it safe to leave your IP address/email all over the world…spamming can get a problem too..if people you can’t trust (where you leave comments on blogs you don’t really know the blogger in person)
I know of a blogger that had some serious “hacking problems” a few months ago…and they had to update security software etc. (she’s got a business at home)

What raincoaster has said above is true. I have seen bunch of people who comment on my blog and they’ve had same IP address. The common denominator is always AOL.

This is a non-issue, there are no security risks. The only reason to worry is if you have bought static IP address for yourself (from your ISP) and if that ends up somewhere else.

hi ismailimail…thank you! I was a bit worried, not for what’s on my blog (comments by others) but more for myself…if i comment on other sites. The funny thing about this is, why were the IP’s all different from the start and even some are still different, it’s only a small group…always commenting on the same blogs…that’s the same?
