IP DNS address phishing scam?
-
I received the following error notice from WordPress.com. It seems like phishing, but the return address seems to be from WordPress. I know you can mask that, but I don’t see any evidence that it is anything but WordPress.
I did see that others have received this same message. Is this a scam or is there something I need to do? (I have replaced our website name with “ourwebsite” in the message below.)

> Hello,
>
> During an internal audit we discovered that at least one of your domains for a blog hosted at WordPress.com has DNS A records that point directly to a set of IP addresses that will cease to work on or after May 20th, 2015.
>
> In order for your blog to continue functioning, you will need to update your DNS records to point to the following IP addresses:
>
> 192.0.78.25
> 192.0.78.24
>
> For the following domain(s):
> blog.ourwebsite.com
> ourwebsite.com
>
> The above 2 IP addresses should replace previous WordPress.com IP addresses entirely. For example, if you used several A records consisting of WordPress.com IP addresses, you now only need 2 records that point to the above provided IP addresses.
>
> According to http://www.dnsperf.com/, WordPress.com DNS is one of the fastest DNS providers available. Instead of changing the A records, you can also change your domain’s nameservers to point to WordPress.com. For more information about using WordPress.com DNS, see:

There is no permanent static IP address for any WordPress.com blog. All IPs are dynamic ie. ever changing. Therefore WordPress.com does not purport to provide static IP addresses. That said, Staff will be along to respond as soon as they can.

This is a legit email from us. We strongly recommend users map their domain to us by pointing their domain to our name servers rather than by using a records pointed to IP addresses. If you got the email it’s because you’ve pointed your domain to us using a records and need to update to the new IP addresses.

It’s not very clear how do do this. I followed the link provided and when I started the process it simply said that I was already pointing towards an IP address so I did not need to do anything – and it didn’t allow me to anyway.

This change has to happen with your domain registrar and they all work a little bit differently. If you contact them and let them know you need to make a change they can help you.
