iPad Users Report Blog “Rolling”

We have many iPad users on our blog. They complain repeatedly that the blog “rolls” when they are trying to read the post, or post comments or read comments. It makes the blog nearly impossible to use. Any suggestions for them? Or is there something wrong with how we have set up our blog?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello! I’m not certain what you mean by “the blog rolls” but I did notice the home page content is quite long and this could cause usability issues, especially on a smaller screen size like the iPad’s.

Currently the front page is set to display the full content for the first ten posts. You could consider displaying the Post Excerpts only so visitors can click the post title (or the “Read More” link) to view the full content.

This should reduce the length and size of the front page and improve site performance, culminating in a better experience for visitors. To make this change, navigate to Appearance → Customize → Content Options from your dashboard.

In addition to rolling (I’m not familiar, either) the iPad users report the screen freezes and crashes. I have wondered about our heavy use of images and third party sites. I have no problem at all with my laptop, but the iPad users have a real struggle. I will see if reducing the number of posts on the front page will help. I’ll look into the excerpt suggestion tomorrow. Appreciate the suggestions! Thank you.

  • Yup the screen freezing and crashing is symptomatic of the usability issues I reported earlier. Reducing the size of the page (by displaying excerpts instead of full post content) should help with this and if you also want to reduce the number of posts on the home page, you can make this change from SettingsReading.

Regarding the heavy use of images, it may help to optimize your images as explained here: https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/. This is also helpful for reducing storage usage and improving overall site performance.

Reducing the number of posts on the home page was a quick and easy fix. I’ll see if they report better performance. I was already reading through the image optimization and trying to grapple with that. It may be useful, also. If I need further help, I’ll ask for help. Thanks so much.
