When you purchase a domain via a domain mapping upgrade from WordPress.com that’s exactly what the domain mapping upgrade is for and exactly what it does. Every original URL no matter where it is clicked on the internet will be seamless redirected to the new domain URL.
Registering a .com, .org, or .net domain through WordPress.com and mapping that domain to your site starts at $18.00 per domain and per year, or $25.00 per domain and per year for a .me or .co domain. For $8.00 more, you can also make the domain registration private.
Mapping a domain you already own costs $13.00 per domain, per year. -
Not free – but they bundle it
domain Registration = $ 5.- / year
Domain mapping = $ 13.- / yearoptional
Private Registration (keeps personal info private about registration) = $ 8.- / year

Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading
All About Domains http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/all-about-domains/You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
As you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
See here if you already own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

so if i have a blog that is cats.wordpress.com and i want to purchase cats.com but i dont want to lose the traffic that i still get at cats.wordpress.com (nor do i want them to see wordpress.com in the address bar) then i should also purchase the domain mapping correct? but IF after a year or two i notice that no one is using the cats.wordpress.com address anymore can i drop the domain mapping tool?
sorry, last question :-D
-
yes purchase the domain mapping upgrade – that gives you the cats.com address – what domain mapping does is put cats.com on top of cats.wordpress.com – cats.wordpress.com still exists – if you don’t renew the domain mapping for cats.com – then there will be no way for people to find cats.com –
you would not want to drop the domain mapping for cats.com
-
why wouldnt i want to drop it though? is there a way to keep cats.com (with all my cats.wordpress.com info) after a couple years and delete cats.wordpress.com eventually?

Only if you move off WordPress.COM to your own host with a WordPress.ORG install – but then your costs will be quite a bit higher –
domain mapping is the part that changes the address your visitors see from cats.wordpress.com to cats.com
