Is ALL advertising illegal on WP blogs?

Hi there-apologies if this is a repeat question. I am considering joining a site called totalbeauty.com which would allow me to generate a little bit of revenue for my blog. this would be done by putting a total beauty widget on my sidebar, or by linking products i review through the totalbeauty site. i understand that advertising is illegal on wordpress, but i’m not clear on if ANY kind of advertising is illegal, or how exactly it works. i dont want to leave wp because i really like the format and ease of use, but if there is no way i can ever hope to make any money off of my blog ever, i need to consider it. and yes, i realize i should have pursued this fully prior to starting the blog, but i’m asking now, so please point me in the right direction. thanks everybody!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The only thing allowed is a link to an etsy show where you are selling things that you actually created yourself.

Any sort of paid advertising is not allowed.

Reviews with links to affiliate sites like Amazon.com are okay, but absolutely always ask staff directly for the definitive answer on your case. http://support.wordpress.com/

Honestly, I make a living off advertising in blogs and I can tell you that’s never going to really make you anything worth going after. Especially in your SIDEBAR; nobody looks at sidebars anymore.

Thanks guys. I know it won’t make me much money, but it still would be nice to make a bit. I will contact support for a definitive answer. Thank you!

If they give you the all-clear for affiliate links, link in POSTS, not in a sidebar widget. You’ll get literally a hundred times the clicks.

Thanks raincoaster for the advice. what i’m trying to figure out is whether linking to totalbeauty.com is the same as an “ad sense” advertisement, which is whats explicitly forbidden by the policy. i contacted support letting them know i was interesting in advertising via an affiliated site, and that they should consider allowing it in the future if they don’t allow it now. i mentioned that i find it a little annoying that you can do it on blogger…but hopefully they won’t take that the wrong way because i know wordpress is a much better blog host for lots of other reasons. when you say that you make your living off of blog advertising, are your blogs on other sites like typepad? or here on WP?

They allow REVIEWS and affiliate links to certain sites. Subject to case-by-case approval. Things you’ve made yourself are always okay. Stuff you’re reselling is iffy.

There are a million things you can do on blogger including post malicious code; the fact that you can do it on blogger is, believe me, not even slightly a factor in WP.com’s decision-making process.

My sites with advertising are all independently-hosted WordPress.
