Is changing my theme 'live'?

I have found a new theme I would like to try, but am unsure how my existing copy will work in the new one. If I press the ‘try and customize’ button on my chosen new theme, will it automatically update my website straight away for the public to see, or does it only change behind the scenes allowing me to make adjustments. In other words, will the ‘old’ website still be live and functioning while I create the new site?

In the Customizer, the ‘old’ website will still be live and functioning while you make changes behind the scenes. Once you click the “Save & Publish” button, then the updates go live for the public.

Is there any way to save a customized theme without publishing it? For example, if I need several days to finish working on the new site, can I save it and come back without making it go live?

@greeneyedghost – No. If you exit the Customizer without clicking the “Save & Publish” button, changes are discarded.

A workaround would be to create another free WordPress.com site just for development and make it private. Copy your content (export and import) to the test site. Now you have a version of your site that you can update in the Customizer, saving changes as you make them. Nobody will see your work-in-progress since the site is private. Once you’re happy with the results, return to your original site and apply those same changes. The test site can remain private in case you wish to do similar work again. It’s kludgy, but may be worthwhile depending on your situation.
