Is CSS ability needed to xperiment w Sandbox themes?
-
Do I need to know how to use CSS if I want to apply some of the Sandbox-10 themes to a WordPress.com blog? If no CSS know-how is necessary, what’s the best (i.e. easiest and snafu-free) way to go about experimenting?

The css customization upgrade is not recommended to those who lack css editing experience. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/about-the-custom-css-upgrade
The easiest way to go about experimenting may be to use a test blog. -
There are some themes designed for Sandbox and that have been already ported for wordpress.com. Perhaps they will be of interest to you https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=17242

Thanks Thief…so I take it you do need the upgrade (and editing knowledge) to try the various Sandbox themes?

You can test things and use Preview without paying for the upgrade, but you can’t save those changes and apply them to the blog without buying the upgrade. That’s a pretty good way to do it, so you don’t end up paying for something that won’t work.

Thanks Rain…just want to make sure I’m understanding: buying the upgrade is also necessary for the themes that have been ported for WP.com, such as Diurnal? In any case, the Preview option will definitely be useful…

Yes, you need the css upgrade to use Diurnal. :)
