Is customizing this limited in the available themes WITHOUT needing CSS?

This is my first day using your paid version of WordPress.com. I am pretty handy at basic desktop publishing – granted I am not needing to become a code programer. Point, click, add, delete, change, re-size, etc… I am masterful at creating great looking graphics. So far, I am not finding a way to customize the theme as much as I thought I would. Is there something I am missing? For example, in none of the themes I’ve tried so far am I able to adjust the font size in the the Tag Line. I am also not seeing ways to do things like adjust the size of text boxes, adjust the size of the header, etc… I again am coming here from reviews both online and from friends touting of the ease of use and custom-ability of WordPress.com and am hoping there exists ways of easy customization – more than I am finding. Again, is there something I am missing? I am praying your answer is not, “You need to learn to use CSS”. That will surely make my time here quite short unfortunately.
    Many Thanks for your service!

That is the answer, actually. If you have the paid Custom Design or Pro upgrades, staff will assist you if you post in the CSS forum.

Bummer! Not really wanting to learn CSS, just wanting to create a simple website. Is it possible there are themes out there that have more customize-ability built into them? Thanks!

Whether they are “out there” or not, at WP.com you can only use the themes on your dashboard under Themes. You can do amazing things with them if you know CSS though. Some offer more flexibility in terms of fonts and colours and layout than others; check the newest ones first, they tend to be most customizable.

Ok, so far, not so good….. as I am continuing to work on one of the themes I’ve chosen, it is terribly glitchy! The font color will not change and the size changes are not happening. I already cleared my cache 2x! I will try a newer theme but not looking good so far. Thanks for your input raincoaster.

Thought I would post one more time here to share that WordPress.com does not seem like the tool for me. I guess I had expectations of it being able to work more like a simple graphic design or word processing program. Too much back end work needed to get the level of customization I want (who would have thunk that maybe having a different background or header of different pages would be considered a high level of customization). There are many other template driven – point and click website design options out there now that I hope WordPress.com will pick up the pace to meet the ease of use and capability of such offerings.

Thank You! Am planning on it. Am making my other choice first so I can make a smooth transition into a new realm…… Kind of sad because there is so much I like about WordPress.com If I only I had the mind (and patience) of a programmer… (^_^)
