Is geotagging information displayed anywhere on published post?

    Hello,
I would like to use the geotagging feature to label my posts by location (for a travel blog). I am able to add the geolocation when creating a post, and see it when I edit a post. However, I do not see the geolocation anywhere on the published post. Should I be seeing the geolocation show up somewhere? Many thanks for any guidance on this!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, Here’s what the Support doc on Geotagging says (emphasis mine):

The location is added to your post or page in various machine-readable formats: geo microformat, geo.position and ICBM meta tags, and GeoRSS and W3C geodata in feeds.

    Geotagging

So it seems that the information included by geotagging will not appear directly in a post or page.

However, both CartoMaps and Google Maps can be embedded on a WordPressdotcom site if you wish to share location with visitors to your site.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/

I’ll try experimenting with this and let you know if I come up with anything else. Thanks for asking!

  • Hi @lauramelling, Jen is right: the geotag info won’t be displayed on your post. That daa is used by other apps right now.

You’d be welcome to mention your location in the post if you’d like, though.

Thanks for the quick responses. I have been adding google maps and location information as tags to my posts using a python script I wrote. I just thought adding the geotagging could provide some automated functionality (such as showing a map, or filtering posts by location). Do you know of any other apps that make use of the WordPress post data in that way?

You’re welcome. There are plugins that use and display that geotag data, but they are available only for the standalone WP software. We can’t install them on WordPressdotcom

@supernovia, just thinking out loud, can the WPcom RSS widget read GeoRSS and if so, what URL should be used for the feed?

But on the other hand @lauramelling, since your WordPressdotcom site is marked Private, I’m pretty certain that this would not work regardless.

    Thanks @justjennifer!

So, my understanding is that the geotagging functionality doesn’t really do anything on WordPressdotcom hosted sites. That’s too bad and I hope they would consider adding location-related capabilities in the future.

In the meantime, I will continue looking into other solutions for using the location data.

You’re very welcome. Again geotagging a post is supposed to generate machine readable data but reading through past support forum threads, it seems a bit elusive.

Beyond that the biggest issue you will have is that a Private site does not generate a public feed.

Hope that helps and good luck.

My travel blog is a public site, so I am interested in methods that will work for private or public sites (ideally both). My search continues! :)

  • That’s too bad and I hope they would consider adding location-related capabilities in the future.

We can always file ideas / requests. What kind of stuff did you have in mind?

    – a map of all posts?

    – finding other people’s blog posts from those locations?

I don’t know if we’d have enough data for the latter, or whether folks would want to expose it, but if you’ll let me know what you’re looking for, I’ll submit the request(s) so we can keep them in mind for future projects.
