  I want to add a category to the menu. not sure what to click on.

  There is a good support article on using categories:

  Organize Posts with Categories

  and this section seems most pertinent :

  Organize Posts with Categories

  Open the Customizer. (My Sites → Design → Customize)
  Go to Menus.
  Select the menu to edit.
  Click on Add Items.
  Select Categories.
  Click the Plus icon next to the Category you want to add.
  Click Publish to save the changes.
