  i am new to this so i apologize up front if this is obvious to everyone. i just started a blog and i want tabs (things at the top that can categorize my posts).
  say for example, i write a post about a trip to paris. i want a tab at the top that would say travel so all the posts about paris, london etc. can be easily found. i have “pages”at the top but since my ‘about me’ is there and is only one page i am thinking that all those pages at the top are only going to be one page.

  my theme is twenty eleven so is this possible with this theme or not? anyone know?

  You can make categories and but them in your sidebar. I have one on my blog. Go to ‘posts’ in your dashboard and then click ‘categories’ and you can make categories from there. Then you need to go to ‘appearance’ in the dashboard and then ‘widgets’ and add the ‘category’ widget into your sidebar :) voila
