Is it better to change my current blog's URL or export the old blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I would like to change my blog name and URL and have recently purchased the new name.com. I’m not happy with the current name and would like to have a complete overhaul. I was wondering if it’s better/easier to change the blog name in settings and then map the new domain, or export my current blog content to a new blog? I’ve created the new blog but there’s nothing on it at present. Should I delete the new one and work with the old one?
Sorry, I’m not very tech savvy so this is all a little confusing for me. Thank you, any help will be greatly appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Chrissy,

Since you’ve already created the new blog, I’d recommend exporting the current blog’s content and importing it on your new blog. (Once you create a blog, that blog’s address is taken and can’t be used on another blog. If you delete the new blog, you won’t be able to use that new blog’s address again.)

To get started, you can head to Tools > Export in your current blog and export all of the blog’s content. That will give you an export file to work with.

Then, you can head to Tools > Import in the new blog and import that file to your new blog. All of the content will be uploaded to the new blog, and then you can set up the new blog’s theme and appearance so it looks the way you want it to.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

    Hi Rachel,

Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Sorry it’s taken me a few days to get back to you. Christmas kept me pretty busy.

I will follow the steps you’ve laid out and let you know how I go. Is it possible to set up the new blog’s theme before importing the old blog, or must all the info be there for the new theme to work properly?

PS. Do I also need to purchase a site redirect to help current readers find me? Thanks again.

    Hi Chrissy,

You don’t need to do anything really before you start the customization process. It frequently helps to have some posts or pages (or both) in place so that you can see how things will look, but they aren’t really necessary. You can just start building at any time!

And in regards to the site redirect, you don’t really need that in most cases. When you move over to the new site, you’ll want to let us know when you’re ready to go and we will migrate all of your subscribers for you. You can also put a notice on your old blog letting visitors know where your new site is. Between those two, there really shouldn’t be any need for you to spend more money!

    Hi amightwp,

Thank you for the advice, amightywp. I’ll let you know when I’m ready. Should I post here or start a new thread? Also (sorry for the multitude of questions) what should I do with my old blog once the subscribers have been moved and my new blog is public? It’s currently private while I work on it.

With regards to my original thread question, I’ve successfully imported all of the data from my old blog to my new blog and I’m almost finished customising the layout etc. Thanks for the advice Rachel!

Many thanks to you both. You’ve made it so much easier for me to do this. I would’ve been lost without your help :)

Oh, you can feel free to post right back here as long as your questions are on the same topic. If it’s a new line of questions, please go ahead and start a new thread.

As for your old blog, it depends. If you don’t think you might need it again, I would keep it set to private. If you aren’t ever going to use either the content or the blog name you can delete it by following these directions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

Remember that a blog name cannot be reused, so if you do delete the blog make absolutely sure you you’ll never want to use your old blog name again.

Thank you so much, amightywp. If you don’t mind, I will post again on this thread when I’m ready to have my current subscribers transferred over. Thanks again for all your help :)

Not a problem at all! Best of luck. :)

Hello and happy new year to you all!

I’ve finished importing all of the data from my old blog to my new blog. Would you be so kind as to transfer my current old blog subscribers over to my new blog?

    Old blog- The Helpful Vegan
    New blog- Hold the Eggplant

Many thanks. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Chrissy :)

    Hi Chrissy,

Just so that I’m sure of things, could you provide the full URL of the two sites that you want me to transfer the subscribers between? Each would start with http://

    Thanks so much!

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

Sorry I forgot to include the full details before.

    Old blog: http://thehelpfulvegan.com
    to…
    New blog: http://holdtheeggplant.com

    Thank you :)

Excellent! That’s exactly what I needed. I have gone ahead and completed that migration and all of your followers are now over at holdtheeggplant.com (and seriously, hold the eggplant. So gross! ;) ).

Let me know if you need anything else!

Ha ha. I’m not a fan either as you can probably tell :)

    Thanks again,

    Chrissy :)
