Is it necessary to transfer a domain after switching to WordPress.org?

Is it necessary to transfer the domain after switching to WordPress.org? Right now I am pointing the name servers to my current hosting. Does WordPress.com/automatic act like a Go Daddy? Or do I have to transfer the domain? Which can bring my site down for 1 to 3 days

Hi,
It’s not necessary to transfer the domain as long as you’re keeping it updated (renewed) with us and your domain has the correct nameservers to properly point it to your site.
The only reason you may want to transfer the domain to your hosting company is if you don’t want to pay at different places. Right now, you’ll need to pay your hosting company for the hosting service, and you need to pay us for the domain’s registration renewal. You’ll be able to keep all things in one place by transferring the domain to the hosting company.
But it’s not necessary to do so. You can keep your site renewed with us at WordPress.com and it’ll properly point/work with your external site.
Feel free to let me know if there’s anything else you need and I’ll be happy to help.
