Is it possible to add a forwarding subdomain?

omg hellllllp. I feel like I’m running in circles with my domain and I clearly have no idea what I’m doing with this. :D

The domain is brightstrangethings.com and account here is brightstrangethings.wordpress.com

I need to be able to do three things with the domain:
    1. Point brightstrangethings.com to my wordpress site here like it always has been,
    2. Forward the subdomain shop.brightstrangethings.com to my Etsy shop,
    3. Point the MX records to Google Apps so I have email

My domain is currently hosted with Namecheap, if that makes any difference; I just finished transfering it out thinking I needed to do that in order to set up the subdomain, and then I realized I’m stupid. :D So currently I have it set up so that the nameservers are WordPress, so my blog is working again, thank heavens. I’ve got the MX records set up here on WordPress so my email is working. But I can’t figure out a way to make the subdomain work.

I found the help doc which covers adding a CNAME record to the DNS, in order to point an additional subdomain out to somewhere else like Tumblr, but there doesn’t appear to be support on Etsy’s end for the idea of pointing a subdomain to a specific shop, as far as I can tell. (The CNAME record worked, but it just loaded up the front page of Etsy.com, instead of my shop.) So I think I would essentially need to set it up as a URL redirect on Namecheap’s end, except I can’t do that while using WordPress as my nameservers. I hope you guys understand what I’m saying because I’m not even sure I do anymore. ;D

If I’m reading the support docs correctly, if I had my blog mapped to a subdomain instead — like say blog.brightstrangethings.com — then I’d be able to change the nameservers to my host’s default and be able to do everything I need to on Namecheap’s side. I’m not averse to doing that. But then I’m concerned that any old links to my blog and search engine links would end up broken.

(The reason I really want a subdomain to point to my Etsy shop is so that if I ever decide to move from Etsy to another shop service, that I won’t have to change all of my printed branding and other stuff, I can just redirect the subdomain URL to the new location. If that makes sense.)

I sincerely hope you understand all this nonsense I’ve just typed out and might have some advice for me. ;D

Let’s go through your three questions.

1: Your domain is working now and points to your WordPress.com blog: http://brightstrangethings.com/
2 and 3: I see you’ve already added the MX records at https://brightstrangethings.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains&action=dnsedit&domain=brightstrangethings.com . On that same page add the line below to link the ‘shop’ sub-domain to your Etsy shop.

    CNAME shop.brightstrangethings.com etstyshoplink.com.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

I can’t seem to get this type of CNAME record to work… I tried it as you’ve given it to me here, but all it did when I tried to go to shop.brightstrangethings.com was send me to my blog at brightstrangethings.com. I also tried setting up this way, which I think was the formatting the help doc recommended:

    CNAME shop brightstrangethings.etsy.com

Which also at least does something, but it sends me to the front page of etsy.com rather than the subdomain. Is it even possible to redirect to a subdomain with a CNAME record?

I can confirm that the sub-domain is working and pointing to your Etsy shop link. However, it seems Etsy ignores it and redirects it to their homepage. It’s possible that they have recently changed something on their end.

I recommend contacting Etsy Support for help at: http://www.etsy.com/se-en/help/contact?ref=help_contact

    Thank you!
