is it possible to export/import only part of a WPblog to another WP blog?
-
@drmike
I have a wordpress.com blog with political/environmental contents that I would like to split into two wordpress blogs, one here and one at the other site. Is this possible or is my only choice to copy and paste? -
gentle bump (no whacking please :P)
EDIT: I now have a problem. I exported all my blog contents figuring I could just delete the 1/2 that didn’t pertain to the new blog. When I attempted to import them I got this message
Request TimeoutThis request takes too long to process, it is timed out by the server. If it should not be timed out, please contact administrator of this web site to increase ‘Connection Timeout’.
Any assistance would be appreciated … coffeee! -
Depends on how and what you’re trying to export.
If it’s specific categories, I would use the RSS feeds for those categories like we used to do for backups and import that into a normal WP blog or a normal WPMU install. But, of course, that wouldn’t get the comments.
Export out an *.XML file and open it with a very basic text editor. You’ll note that the posts and the comments pretaining to those posts sit between
<item>tags. If there was a post and it’s comments that you didn’t want to include, I would just delete that portion of the file and resave it as a TXT file. That’s what I do when I have these huge exports that I reimport for folks around here on occasion.Hope this helps,

Thanks for the advice on how to delete prior to import. The plain text editor Notebook is a real challenge for me to read due to my vision problems. I think it would be easier to import/export the whole blog and delete the unwated posts using the single button technique in the manage area.
Right now I’m trying to import the entire contents from http://timethief.wordpress.com to http://trustislands.wordpress.com
This is the second time it “timed out” :(
Do you think this could be a feedback matter? -
You can see if maybe you can get a staff member to import it for you or I can do it for you tomorrow if you want.
I think that wp.com has it’s ‘timeout’ time limit set rather low if you ask me. I hit the timeout on occasion myself doing importing. That’s why I know how to delete the post that have already made it in.

This is becoming more and more like a paperback novel. So now it seems the export has taken place but (and it’s a big BUT) the posts that were exported were dated September 29th and before. This is interesting for two reasons
(1) today is October 29th – a month of posts were not exported/imported (six pages listed in manage)
(2) this date of September 29th is the same date I noticed the weirdness of the severe fall off in getting incoming links to the same blog
What’s your take on this?EDIT: I sent in the following feedback to staff:
This morning I exported a copy of the contents of my blog at http://timethief.wordpress.com to my other blog at http://trustislands.wordpress.com The export to my desktop went smoothly. However the import was not a smooth process and in fact it timed out twice. When the import to the new blog was accomplished I found that the contents were dated from Setember 29th and earlier. In other words one month of posts (6 pages when viewed in the manage area of http://timethief.wordpress.com) were not successfully imported.
This date of September 29th is interesting for a second reason as the third week of September I noted a substantial fall-off in the number of incoming links being recorded on my dahsboard. I’m wondering if the two events aren’t related.
I’m not inclined towards copying and pasting 6 pages of posts into the trustislands blog. Is it possible to simply clear the contents at http://trustislands.wordpress.com and start again? Please advise me as to where to go from here.
Thanks, in advance, for your attention. -
@drmike
Okay I’m on day 2 now of this story. I have reached the end of my rope. Yesterday you saidYou can see if maybe you can get a staff member to import it for you or I can do it for you tomorrow if you want.
Today I am throwing myself at your feet (and staff’s) groveling :(
In the second go around on export/import I ended up with imported posts that only went as far as July.
Today I deleted them ALL manually and tried a third time. I couldn’t even get an export file. The error message said it found no feed at my site and I kept ending up on Bloglines bahuwahhh! No feeds were found. Please verify that the website publishes an RSS feed. :(
I do so have a feed. It is properly configured. I have sent in a feedback and am sniveling while waiting.
