  is it possible to have a ‘shop’ section in a wordpress.com basic website?

  Only the Business Bundle has the ability to add ecommerce. See here:

  However, that doesn’t prevent you from being able to link from your site to a 3rd party site like etsy, artfire, smugmug and the like by using a Custom Menu. Here’s more info on that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
