Is it possible to link a navigation tab to open up an URL in a new browser tab?

I was just working on a site for a client in which I was able to make use of a very handy plug-in that allows you to embed a URL within a child menu, so that, instead of bringing you to that page and having to click on a link, upon clicking it, it open up a new tab in the browser and brings you right to the linked site.

Is there any way of doing this?

    Thanks

Hi there, yes you can using a Custom Menu. I see you have created one, but not saved it. Go to Appearance > Menu, finish configuring your menu the way you want it. To make menu items open in a new tab, click on the menu item right end in the custom menu and under the Navigation Label field check the box to have it open in a new tab. After you have made all your changes and settings, save the menu again.

Thank you so much for your very speedy response. I feel a bit slow on the uptake with the whole custom menu thing. I am in there, but I do not see anything about a custom menu or anything allowing me to put in a URL?

What I see in the menu pretty much mirrors my parent and child page structure, so I am not understanding custom menus advantages above and beyond their expanding respective page options.

I’d love an example on what sets the two apart.

You can add custom links under the “Links” section at left. Click on it and then fill in the URL and the label you wish to use and add it to the menu and save. See here for more on inserting custom links into menus: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links

Custom menus allow much greater control in most cases. You can arrange them in any order you wish, you can add categories and tags, or even posts, to the menu and of course you can also set any menu item to open in a new tab/window.

I am going to take some time later and go over your helpful information and support links. I wanted to thank you again before I start chasing my tail on another tangent and forget. Cheers!

How do I then add the link to the custom menu?

    1. Click on the “link” section on the left at Appearance > Menu.
    2. Enter the URL and the Label that will appear in the menu and click the Add to Menu button. You can then, by drag and drop, reposition that item where you want it in the created menu at right.
    3. Below the list of menu items, click the box where it says “Theme Location __ Primary Menu
    3. Save the menu by clicking the red Save Menu button.
    4. Visit your site and the new custom menu, complete with the new custom link should be there. If not, clear your browser cache and take another look.

Well I finally figured out why I wasn’t seeing what you were talking about. The links area was not selected under “screen options.” I did what you said and saved (I did not see a red save button though) and when I refreshed my site, every imaginable page peppered the navigation area?

Ah, sorry about that. They showed up for me in your dashboard and I thought that module was active.

You will need to edit the menu you created and take out the menu items you don’t want. It looks like perhaps you had added everything into that menu.

You can organize them into submenus (sort of like child pages) by grabbing the menu item and pulling it a little to the right.
