Is it possible to list categories on a page?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have four sections to my blog and want to list certain categories on different Pages. For example, on a page called Genealogy, I’d like to list all posts I’ve written for that topic. But on a page called Writing, I’d like to list numerous categories and their sub-categories. Is this possible on a WordPress.com blog? Is there specific coding I should be using within the content on the Page?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

You can’t attach categories to pages, categories can be done only for post.

You can look the this support document to get the more info on page and post

    Pages vs. Posts

Here is code for the archives of the genealogy category which you can copy to a page called “Genealogy.” There are a couple of ways to get this code. This way retains your theme formating:
Open your genealogy category page on half of your screen.
Open a “add new page” on the other half. Work in visual editor.
Highlight the line above, the title, and the date. (if you want the date)
Drag that to your new page.
    Repeat for each page.
Could be I’m clumsy today, but I had to switch to html and fix code. See the first < span > in the first title? It closes before the rest of the code. It only happened sometimes. so i moved it to the end, as you should: to after • November 8, 2009 •

Remember that you’ll have to add new pages manually to your list because it won’t update automatically.

There are other ways to copy, but they don’t retain the orange text color.

Copy all the titles, tags etc. to TextEdit (or whatever rtf program you have). The links will transfer. Edit out the tags and categories and whatever you don’t want. You could then use div tags to define the color for all.

Open source code and copy the list of the category widget. This results in extra large text and the color formating is gone.

Sorry, I should have looked at http://karenleefield.wordpress.com blog but after doing so, yes, that looks like what I wish to do.

Tess, thank you for the reply and your time in explaining the method to me. I did try it and there is a lot of mucking around. I’m not keen on having to manually add each post as I write it either as I’ll start out with good intentions but will soon “forget”.

Upon thinking about this issue, I guess I could like to the category and get a list that way for the Genealogy page, but the writing page will have to be rethought completely. Not sure what I can do there, unless I link to each category that I want to show. As the page isn’t going to be updated all the time, that might be the way for me to go.

    @karenleefield
    You are very welcome.

Yes, I certainly understand the good intentions—I’ve got a different issue on my own blog (no links to next and previous posts) that I have some html catch-up work to do…

I see you have switched to Garland, which looks very nice.
And now you don’t have that orange font to deal with. I wonder if using the archives shortcode would be useful to just drag the formatted titles to your pages? Some themes are touchy-er than others.

Anyway, sorry I wasn’t more helpful.

    Best
    ~Tess
