Is it possible to move wordpress sites to wordpress.com?

    Hi,

Is it possible to move my wordpress sites from my dedicated hosting to wordpress.com hosting? This are several sites on a primary domain and in a folder, like jonfr.com/volcano. The dedicated hosting costs is now just too much for me and I want to lower the costs of this. The website can get considerable amount of traffic, up to 100.000 pages views a day, it is uncommon but does happen every few years when a volcano erupts in Iceland.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi @jonfr,

Yes, you can move your WordPress sites from another hosting provider to WordPress.com. The support guide below will help you with this:

Feel free to respond if you need further help.

    Best :)

  • Hi there,

First off, on WordPress.com hosting is free, and all sites on our servers have unlimited bandwidth/views, so we’ll never charge you because your views exceeded a specific limit.

But we do offer upgrade plans that include optional extra features. Using your own domain or installing plugins are among those features, and you’d need a plan on every WordPress.com site where you want to use those features.

From the instructions above you’ll see you have two options for migrating to us:

    1) You can migrate the content only to us. To do this, you’ll first create a new free WordPress.com site in your account. Then you’ll use the built-in Export feature on the current site to create a WordPress export file, and import that to the new WordPress.com site.

If you want the WordPress.com site to be on its own custom domain, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan.

    2) For a full-site migration, which also moves over your plugins and themes, you’ll need the Business Plan, and you’ll need this for every site you want to upgrade.

This are several sites on a primary domain and in a folder, like jonfr.com/volcano

Also important to note here is that we don’t support connecting a site to a subdirectory like that. You’d instead need to map the WordPress.com sites to subdomains, like volcano.jonfr.com.

Let me know if you have any other questions about this.

Thanks for this information. This doesn’t work for me but I wanted to be sure.
