Is it possible to only use the wordpress app through godaddy.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased a plan on WordPress.com and created a blog.

After realizing I couldn’t map my domain from wix.com, I purchased a plan through godaddy.com for domain transfer from wix.com and new web hosting.

Now I have been told by godaddy.com that I can use the wordpress app at no charge (since I have already purchased a plan through them).

Is it possible for me to save a copy of my database & files and send them directly to godaddy.com and use the app for wordpress.com instead of continuing to pay for a plan directly through wordpress.com.

Will I be able to get a refund for what I have already paid directly to wordpress.com since I am still technically using the site and paying for it elsewhere?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there – there are a couple of things to consider here. You currently have one site hosted here on WordPress.com for free, and you’ve purchased a $99 upgrade package for additional functionality.

Then, you also purchased a hosting plan from GoDaddy so you could transfer your domain to them. You can either map your domain here to your WordPress.com blog and host with us (in which case you do not need hosting from GoDaddy, but just the domain), or you can set up a self-hosted WordPress installation hosted with GoDaddy.

Here’s an article that will help you figure out which is the best option for you (your GoDaddy site would be a “WordPress.org” site): http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you decide to host at GoDaddy, let me know and I’ll cancel and refund your upgrades with us, as they are not applicable to WordPress sites hosted elsewhere.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thank you so much for the information. I apologize for my lack of knowledge with this sort of thing, but I am very new at this.

What do you suggest I do?

I am not a very technically savvy person, so I think wordpress.com is my best choice (over wordpress.org), which is why I initially created a blog and upgraded in the first place. I went to GoDaddy because I knew that they would support the “mapping” of my domain after I transferred it from Wix.

I only brought GoDaddy into the picture because I thought it was necessary to keep the original domain name I purchased from Wix.

If there is a way to only deal with WordPress.com (have them host my site, be able to edit through them, etc.) I would have no problem canceling my GoDaddy account.

  • Hi there – yes, I think in that case, you’d be better off at WordPress.com. What’s your domain name?

  • Hi there – Ok, so that domain is registered through GoDaddy, but the name servers are pointed to Wix. So, you just need to point the name servers to WordPress.com, instead. This article explains how:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

When you get to the step about adding mapping on our end, you won’t need to pay, as this is included in your premium upgrade.

And here are GoDaddy’s instructions for how to do this on their end:
    http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/664/setting-nameservers-for-your-domain-names

Let me know if you have any trouble with this!

Thank you so much, I will work on that shortly.

So there is no way to use only wordpress.com and keep my current domain name and possibly add an email?

I have already paid for a package from godaddy and also had to add an email package in order to get a (email visible only to moderators and staff).

I would love to be able to only use one registrar/host/email provider.

  • You can use that domain and email with WordPress.com. Your domain will remain registered with GoDaddy and your email will stay hosted with them, but you will just need to make some changes to make the domain show your WordPress.com blog.

Let me know when you’ve updated the name servers as I described, and I’ll help you add the MX records for GoDaddy here, so that your email will keep working.

    I changed the name servers.

I feel like I may have spent more than I actually needed to, please correct me if I’m wrong.

I initially paid Wix to renew my domain.
Then paid GoDaddy to transfer it.
I currently have the Economy Plan from GoDaddy as well as the IMAP add on for email.
I have also upgraded my wordpress account.

Is this all I need to do?
I’m assuming I should keep the wordpress upgrade and continue using WordPress.com as opposed to the wordpress.org app GoDaddy offers.

  • Hi there – perfect, you’re all set! And I added the DNS for your email, so give it a few hours and then let me know if it doesn’t start working for you again.

As far as what you’ve paid, it sounds like everything was necessary, except perhaps you’ve paid for web hosting with GoDaddy and you only really need to pay for whatever it costs to have your domain registered with them and your email hosted with them.

I’m not familiar with their prices, however, so you’ll need to check with them about that.

Let me know if you need any more help with your WordPress.com site! :)
