When you purchase a domain URL and a domain mapping upgrade from a .wordpress.comURL to a domain URL all that changes is the URLs and nothing else. The content stays exactly where it is.

You know, I’m way, way, way, way over my head here. I think maybe the mapping option is the simplest? I’ve already purchased a domain name and all I’m trying to accomplish is removing WordPress from the web address. So is mapping the easiest answer or moving to a self-hosted site? Or — really stoopid question — is there no real difference?
