Is it possible to remove IP addresses on comments?
-
Under Dashboard>Comments it is possible to remove the URL by clicking on the little x.
Can the same be done for IP addresses? Would wordpress.com be able to make that happen or would I have to file a feature request for wordpress?
I thought about removing it entirely or replacing it by 127.0.0.1 for privacy reasons.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.
This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.

It’s about a wordpress.com hosted blog.

IP addresses only show for you in the dashboard. They do not show on the site itself, nor is it accessible by the public. If you want to remove URLs put into comment website fields when someone makes a comment, edit the comment and remove the URL from the website field and save.

Thank you for your help, I should have said why I asked for this.
I knew already that the IP addresses are not public, that they are only available to me via the Dashboard.
While IP addresses are useful upon approving comments I have no use for them after I did that. Other users (moderators, authors, etc.) can see the IP addresses for comments that where made long before they got that role.
And I want to have less data I could do anything bad with, while also reducing the amount of data that could get into wrong hands when my account gets hacked (or in other scenarios, the accounts of other users)
I assumed that I would need to file a ticket for that, but since I have an account here I thought that asking doesn’t hurt.
-
Filing a support ticket will make no difference as what thesacredpath has told you that you can do above, is all that can be done on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.
-
Thank you. I was talking about a ticket over at wordpress.org, whenever they got a feature/bug-tracker. Well they got a forum, too.
I still assume that wordpress (the software) does not have this feature and therefor I can’t to that on the wordpress.com blog, but once it may (if at all) get implemented (in the software) and wordpress.com does not disable it I would be be able to do what I want.
Obviously it would make no sense to “call” the support on wordpress.com

Hi again,
I’m aware of the wordpress.org forums. However, about 30% of those who post to this forum day in and day out are mistakenly posting to the wrong support forum. I’m sorry my response did not meet your approval. It’s good to know that you know where to post. -
Hello again,
you do an amazing job as volunteer by answering all these questions. (I guess most if not of the volunteers are great).
I could have written “I assumed that I would need to file a ticket for that on wordpress.org” to avoid this communication problem.

@bastikononion
Hi again,
There are some many times that I could have written my comments and answers to questions in better ways so I didn’t create a communication problem that it makes my head spin when I impinge on recalling them. I’m finally off to enjoy some sun now and I’m wishing you a good weekend. :) -
The thing is, for normal people, IP addresses do absolutely no good since IP addresses are not unique anymore. A single IP address can be assigned to literally thousands of people. ISPs do that to save on expenses.
In addition, if you had my IP address, it would not give you even my general location since my IP address always reports that I’m in the Pacific Northwest somewhere, and I’m 4,000 miles away from there. Where I lived before, my IP would say I was anywhere from 350 to 800 miles from where I was.
IP addresses just aren’t that big a deal anymore. I understand your concern, but…
-
If you are truly concerned about bloggers having your IP address, which as tsp says, is no big deal, then use TOR to disguise it, or simply do not comment on those blogs.

@timethief
Thanks, I wish you the same. (It was late evening here) (I seemed to be tired as I forgot words or used wrong words, like to instead of do)@thesacredpath
Thank you, I understand your points. I know that IP addresses get re-assigned. They are not too problematic. In the very end people still have to trust me that I don’t keep their IP addresses, whenever I’m able to remove/replace the IP address. (I don’t want to start a discussion here about where the IP address puts you on the map, but on my checks it’s often within a 35 mile radius, sometimes the city matches. It goes up to 160 miles sometimes.)@raincoaster
My question and the proposed solution couldn’t help myself unless I convince blog owners to get rid of (my) IP addresses. Overall your points are correct, one can either disguise it or don’t comment at all. BTW.: It’s spelled Tor instead of TOR, although it’s an acronym for The Onion Router. (In case anyone cares).I created a thread at wordpress.org. It may or may not come.
Thanks to all for your support and your points. I guess I can call this here done. I don’t know if it’s worth anything to keep this open until
a) I can remove IP addresses (in which case it would be resolved)
b) It wont get implemented (in which case I call it resolved, too)
c) WordPress.com disables the function (in which case I call it rejected, if there’s such a thing)It’s your turn on how to handle this.
