Is it possible to reuse *my own* (not someone else's) deleted blog's name?

  • Unknown's avatar

I had a blog which I deleted but whose name[1] I would like to reinstate. However, when I try to reuse the name, I’m told it is in use. If I then go to that URL in my browser, I’m told the blog has been deleted. Now I’ve already read the info (http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/) on recycling *someone else’s* blog name, but the former owner of the name in question here is me[2].

Anyone know if/how I can have the old name — i.e. *my* old name — reinstated?

    thx.

    [1] It’s just the name I want. I don’t need the now-deleted content.
[2] There is a small chance I am mis-remembering and in fact the old name was never mine (I have it on other blog engines, so I *may* be thinking of those). In that case, fine; I understand that reinstating is not appropriate in that situation. But I don’t think this is the case — I’m fairly sure the original owner of the name was me.

Blog names are the same as usernames for the most part. Usernames can be turned into blog names, but blog names cannot be turned into usernames.

It irrelevant who registered the blog and who deleted it. The URL is gone and cannot be recycled and reused period.

Deleting a site permanently removes it and you’ll never be able to reuse its WordPress.com address. If you delete a blog you will not be able to get it back and no one else will be able to use that blog address. You must be sure you never want to use the blog again if you delete it. There are multiple warnings given that blog deletion is permanent. A verification link is sent in an email and must be clicked to delete a blog. If you clicked it and the blog was deleted it’s game over. http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

However, you can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

Thanks timethief, but I don’t think that’s exactly true. WP’s own info (at the link I quoted) says:

“If you find that a blog address is registered by another user, you may be able to obtain it for your use if the owner of the blog agrees to transfer it to you.”

That implies reuse is possible. It’s true it doesn’t explicitly say it’s possible after deletion, but neither does it say the opposite. And it is certainly not *technically* impossible. As a policy, wp.com may choose not to allow it, but it can in theory be done. And as the above quote shows, they are not averse to reuse in any circumstance.

In fact I do own a domain which will be the primary URL for my blog, via mapping. So strictly speaking I don’t really need the wordpress name. But it’s simpler if possible.

Let me walk you through this. The Admin who has the username account that registered any blog that has not already been deleted can make another WordPress.com account holder an official user of the blog, promote their role to Admin and then transfer the blog to that username account. If the blog has been deleted that cannot be done.

What is this domain URL that your refer to?
What is the underlying .wordpress.com blog URL of the blog being mapped from to the domain URL?

    Thanks again timethief.

    > Let me walk you through this.
    > … If the blog has been deleted that cannot be done.

If that’s true, then my question is done. But “does deletion imply no recycling” is such a central part of what I’m asking, that you *merely saying* “yes” or “walking me through” is not, since I don’t know you nor your level of knowledge, enough. Sound fair?

But I absolutely appreciate you having taken time to give some answers. Thank you!

I’m sorry you failed to provide the URLs I asked for above as they would be most helpful.

I’ll tag this thread for Staff intervention. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  • Unknown's avatar

Timethief, I can do that, but I’d rather do it directly to “Staff” (see my other thread where I’m asking about how to talk to them). Thanks for doing the tagging thing.

    Again, thanks for your help.

This is a peer support forum where Volunteers and Staff work cooperatively to deliver WordPress.com support. There is no phone support here and we Volunteers do not provide support by email.

Volunteers answer most questions posted into forum threads and Staff monitor. When Volunteers cannot provide the required support we flag threads for Staff attention.

If you have purchased an upgrade then you can usually contact Staff directly using this link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ Note: Staff frequently choose to direct the contact link to these peer support forums on weekends, holidays, when they attend quarterly meet-ups and/or when they have a backlog or have lots of code changes to be made. There are always Staff behind the scenes, who aren’t displaying a visible presence on these forums though they are monitoring forum threads.

If you have not purchased an upgrade and cannot use the contact link then simply wait patiently for a Staff response in this thread.

Deleting a blog is permanent and the name cannot be used again.

You can start a new blog by logging in to WordPress.com and then going to http://en.wordpress.com/signup/

With any blog, you can also use your custom domain with Domain Mapping upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

That implies reuse is possible. It’s true it doesn’t explicitly say it’s possible after deletion, but neither does it say the opposite.

For the record, the quotation was deliberately falsified. Actually it reads:
“If you find that an active blog address is registered by another user, you may be able to obtain it for your use if the owner of the blog agrees to transfer it to you.”

Deleting a blog is permanent and the name cannot be used again.

    Thanks kardotim.
