is it possible to transfer WordPress.com blog to localhost?

    Hello everybody,

I was wondering if it was possible to transfer a WPcom blog to self-hosted localhost? I don’t think so because of GNU/Linux permissions.

In fact, we can make a copy of the blog using wget and view the blog off-line but we don’t see the pictures. Of course, we can add them to a file, and change all the links but that’s time-consuming.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. Here are some basic steps. Of course you can skip the part about finding a hosting provider…

That part I know airodyssey. Transferring the database is a cinch but I don’t think I can get the images from WPcom. Well, the text is more important anyway, and the transfer is an improvement from copying with wget.

I’d forgotten how easy it is to install WordPress (.org) :-)

If you transfer the content using Export / Import the images should be installed on the new site during the Import process, at least they have always been for me, should work for your Local Host also as long as it has access to the internet.

There maybe a problem with permissions though. I don’t see how WPcom could connect to /var/www/ — is your local install on GNU/Linux?

The transfer from one WPcom blog to another works fine of course.

I transferred a couple of WordPress.ORG installs to Local Host and things worked fine including the images. The Local Host was on a plain PC using Windows and xampp. Should work the same for WordPress.COM sites. Don’t think I ever tried to go the other way and yes I would expect the images would not go from Local Host to WordPress.COM.

I do it all the time to local host and seldom have any issues, and as long as I choose to have it bring over the attachments, it has always brought them over.

It would work on Xampp because there’s no security at all.

thesacredpath, do you use GNU/Linux or Windows?

I use Mac and MAMP and have seldom had a problem getting attachments off of either wordpress.COM, or off of a self-hosted blog and into localhost. You cannot of course run a “web” site off of localhost, but you can use it for development reasons, or as a backup. I use it when developing websites so that I have all the client’s content to work with instead of working with sample data.

Of course, but as you say it is convenient. For us it is a way to show our blog in a place where there’s no connection.

Mamp is very similar to Xampp, I suppose.

I’ll try again. Many thanks for your help.

Yeah, it should work just fine with XAMPP. I know people using it without issues, but I’ve never set it up or used it since I don’t do Windows.

I don’t use Xampp either though you can install it on GNU/Linux — ever heard of GNU/Linux WPcom bloggers, I wonder?

Okay, the full import worked. Last time I tried, the servers must have been too busy. Today, the import was almost immediate.

Solved and many thanks to you all!
