Is mapping necessary on self-hosted sites?

  I moved my blog to my own hosting account, so I don’t need domain mapping anymore, right? To clarify, gailperryjohnston.com, which I bought through Godaddy, is now on on my GoDaddy hosting account, so can I cancel the $13 auto-renew mapping fee?

  Correct.

  However, if you think you have any traffic that was coming to your site through your _____.wordpress.com URL, you might want to keep the mapping as it will redirect people to your gailperryjohnston.com URL and to your new self-hosted site.

  But in general, no, you do not need the mapping any longer.
