Is Mapping the same as Hosting?

So I currently have a domain name registered with Go Daddy. I had my site hosted by Apple’s MobileMe and it was created using iWeb. Apple discontinued MobileMe which led me to look into other options for my website. WordPress seems to be able to do everything I want. This morning I joined and purchased the premium package which lets me use my domain name. I followed the instructions for mapping and everything was working fine until a few minutes ago. Now, everytime I visit my website and any of its pages I get sent to a GoDaddy page which states that my domain name is parked. Here is my question – is mapping the same as hosting? Meaning, do I have to pay GoDaddy to host my domain name as well as pay wordpress the mapping fee? I thought the mapping included hosting. Thanks for your help

  • No, we’re just a blogging service, not a hosting provider. Mapping simply directs your domain name to your WordPress.com blog. However, it really sounds like all you need is a WordPress.com blog anyway.

You would have to still pay GoDaddy for the domain registration, but you don’t have to pay them for any hosting services.

When a domain is registered or altered, there is a process called propagation, where information about the domain name is passed to internet service providers all over the world. This process can take up to 72 hours (though usually much less). During that time, you may also receive a warning message in your browser about “redirect errors”. Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often your internet service provider updates their records. Please rest assured that everything is proceeding normally with your domain.

You can continue to update your site while your custom domain propagates, by going directly to your Dashboard, here:

If you still have trouble viewing the site after 72 hours has passed, please try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies:

If that doesn’t work, try clearing your local DNS cache:
