Is my gallery working correctly?
-
Hi. I have created an article with one photo (olives in the rain) alongside the text, and another 9 in a gallery sequence. I followed the instructions in the Support docs to edit the html code for the gallery to exclude the olives in the rain photo. In the finished posting, the gallery correctly shows only the 9 thumbnails, but when you click into the gallery and view the photos one full page at a time – hey presto – the olives in the rain photo turns up at the end of the gallery sequence. So… have I missed a trick with the html code to really fully exclude that photo from the sequence, or is that how it is supposed to work, or is this a “it isn’t working as it’s supposed to” that I should formally submit to Support to fix? Specific URL for article: http://malvedos.wordpress.com/2010/12/20/olive-harvest-at-malhadas/ Thanks very much.

I think this is what you are looking for > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#editing-a-gallery
You can also exclude images from being included in the Gallery by ID number. This has to be done in the HTML editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode

@sinthea, you’re not missing a thing. Excluding an image from the Gallery only affects the front page. If you browse Gallery attachment pages, the excluded image is still there.
It’s nothing new; been that way since they implemented the Gallery feature.
The other option in Gallery is to link to individual photos, which, of course, eliminates the problem.

TT – thanks, I was working with those support documents but Jenn’s blog and entry were new to me.
Jennifer, I followed all your tips – I fixed gallery code to read include = the nine photos and then I deleted the olives in rain from post / gallery / media library altogether. I then re-uploaded it to Media Library and inserted (as you describe in your Update text immediately above the Seashell photo) – and now it no longer turns up at end of attachment page sequence.- but when you go into the first photo page – lo, you can backtrack to olives in rain on an attachment page. I added exclude = photo number for the newly uploaded version, but … no luck. On your blog post linked by TT, your Winter in Akko gallery does not include the seashell photo – how did you do that? Or am I stuck with some peculiarity because I’m in Twenty Ten and you use Inuit Types?
thanks so much, sorry to be floundering so … I realise this is not the end of life as we know it, but I do hate uncontrollable messiness!

That sea shell image was added before the “exclude” function arrived.
What I did was upload it to a different post entirely, without inserting it in the post I uploaded it to, then inserted it from the media library to the post where it appears.
You can still do that. :)
Sorry, must dash…
