Is Patreon allowed on wordpress.com blogs?
-
I have a Patreon page to help me with funding for my writing (hiring an editor, upgrading equipment, paying my bills, etc), and I was wondering if it was against WordPress advertising guidelines. I’m not advertising or selling a product with this, it’s just a way to accept donations. My thought is to put a Patreon link in my sidebar. Is that allowed?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The only way to receive donations on a WordPress.com blog is by creating a Paypal donation button.
PayPal – Know that the only instructions that will work for posting a PayPal donation button on a WordPress.com blog are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
Note that the PayPal email link is not supported and PayPal customization options are not supported either https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/paypal-button-41?replies=12#post-2517229 This is not likely to be changed any time soon, if at all. -
I understand that I can sell my own things on a wordpress.com blog through PayPal, but this is a crowdfunding website I’m mentioning. I’m just wondering if it’s allowed to simply have a link to my Patreon page.

We have code restrictions https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/. The answer is no you cannot post any Javascript code for crowdfunding and that’s what, in essence, you are asking. Read: https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/#javascript

No, I don’t require any Javascript code for this. What I mean is a text or image widget with a link in it. I’ve done this before to link to other blogs or websites I follow. I’m not asking about whether Javascript code can be used, I’m asking about whether a link to Patreon, something that involves paying money to me, is allowed in the rules or guidelines.

The Patreon code will on any wordpress.COM hosted site.
https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/patron-button-and-widgets-by-codebard/To use it you need to hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.ORG site. Moving to Self-Hosted WordPress https://move.wordpress.com/

So, it’s not allowed by rules or guidelines to tell people about my Patreon page in the sidebar? I’m not interested in a Patreon widget, and lack the budget for a wordpress.org site.
-
I guess what I’m saying is this: Are we allowed to tell people about how to donate? I understand there are instructions for PayPal. But are we allowed to tell people about a Kickstarter or Patreon campaign that accepts donations for a project? Or is that advertising that isn’t allowed?

The answer is yes you can share that information in a blog post.

Okay, thanks. That’s what I was looking for. Sorry about the runaround conversation. Would a page be okay? Or only a blog post?
-
Either one. However, you will need to link directly to the exact crowdfunding page because the code for the plugins, widget, etc. will not work.

Hi @jaydeejapan, just to clarify: you wouldn’t be able to JavaScript or iFrames.
But you can link your page on their site. We don’t mind if you do that in a widget or a post or whatever, or even in a “donate” link in your menu, so long as that isn’t the sole purpose of your site.
I’m also filing a request to have support for their official widget added here.
