Is posting a question to a problem with WordPress.com the only support avenue?

  Is this forum the only way to get help with tech problems with WordPress.com problems?

  Not if you have paid upgrades. If you do, your questions from the dashboard Help button go directly to support.

  There is an email to use in case of emergency, support at wordpress dot com, but naturally your definition of emergency and theirs might differ.

  In general, you will get your problems solved faster by posting in the forums anyway.
