Is “Private” Domain Registration Available?
-
Hi. I’m interested in obtaining my own domain name for my wordpress blog (www.example.com, instead of http://www.example.wordpress.com).
However, I prefer to have a “private” registration, so that my personal information is not visible under the Whois, that other people can access.
Sites like GoDaddy offer a “private” registration service for a fee.
I am wondering if I register a Domain name through wordpress, will I have the option to get a “private” registration?
If Not, then how about if I first register my Domain name through GoDaddy.com and pay for their “private” registration service, and THEN switch my Domain name over to WordPress.com… Do you know if my “private” registration that I did with GoDaddy will still be valid after this?
Thanks to anyone who can answer this question!

What you would do is register with another service that allows this, then pay $10 per year to connect that URL and your WordPress.com blog. Note that this is going to be self-defeating if you’ve done anything on your WP.com blog to identify yourself. But it’s very common; it’s just more expensive than getting the name and mapping both with WP.com

This is a big concern for me too. I already registered through WP.com, and am trying to add private registration now. What do you do if you already registered?

If you wait 60 days you can transfer to another registrar.
They typically charge the amount for a domain renewal. Not needing a renewal isn’t the point – it’s just what they charge. The 60 days is set by ICANN, not us.

A word of advice: retroactive privacy seldom works. My advice would be to write off the $15 and start again fresh, with the external registrar and domain mapping if privacy is critical to you.
