Is registering a domain with a plan upgrade I just bought safe and private?

  • Unknown's avatar

I just upgraded my plan to the personal plan and it came with a free domain. But before I claim and register it I have a few questions. 1.) is it safe and is any of my information public? 2.) if I ever want to delete or revert back to UpwardsUp.wordpress.com Can I? 3.) is the domain registered through WordPress.com? 4.) what do I do if I don’t want the domain anymore?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi upwardsup,

No worries! You can choose private registration without having to make any of your contact information public. Your old address will still work, but WordPress.com will automatically redirect traffic from your old address to your new one. Yes custom domains that you choose in WordPress.com are registered here in WordPress.com. Please read detailed description below

    Public Versus Private
When you register a domain name, you have two options: public or private registration.

If you choose to register a domain publicly, your name, email, and address automatically become available to anyone, anywhere, including spammers, marketers, and other people who you might not want to share your information with.

With private registration, you can set up a new domain name without making any of your contact information public, and still enjoy all the benefits of regular domain name registration. It’s like being listed in the phone book: You can either have your number and address published, or you can pay to be unlisted.

All WordPress.com plans include a free domain credit with optional privacy protection. Privacy Protection for additional domains is a paid upgrade that costs $8.00 per year per domain registration.

1.For all .ca domains, the Private Registration feature is enabled by default with no additional fee. For .fr domains, Private Registration is enabled by default with no additional fee for individual registrants. It is not available for organization registrants. For .in domains, Private Registration is not available.

    Hope that clarifies.

I want to use my domain that came with my plan upgrade, but don’t want people to be able to see my name, address, etc on any whois lookup site. How do i know that my information isn’t connected to the domain for sure? Also what if someone wanted to find a way around the privacy protection or whois lookup system?

    Hi again,

The best way to protect the domain name is to protect the administrative email account associated with the domain.

When you register a domain name using the private registration option in WordPress.com, all your personal details such as your name, address, phone and administrative email address are hidden from the public.

Whenever a hacker performs a WHOIS lookup for your domain name, he will not be able to find your name, phone or the administrative email address. Thus, the private registration provides an extra security and protects your privacy.

Please choose private registration as specified in this support document. After that check details at a WHOIS service to know whether your registration is private or not.

    Hope that clarifies.

    Thank you.
