is SEO "ready and/or "optimized" really that important?
-
Hello,
I am starting up a new blog and having difficulty choosing a theme – there are so many!! Some say SEO ready or optimized, and some do not. How important is it to choose a theme that is SEO ready/optimized, and if it doesn’t say that it is, can it be SEO optimized later?
thank you,
S. -
Hi there,

While we are waiting for Staff, if you look at those wonderful resources that timethief posted, you’ll notice that all of them deal in best practices such as adding categories/tags to your posts, using keywords in your post slugs and/or titles, and writing naturally. Very little (if anything) is said about themes.
If you will be showcasing your writing, then themes meant for writers should be looked at.
If your site will focus on visual content, such as photography or graphics and the like, then look for a portfolio/photography type theme.
Search engines are looking for content, less in how it is presented. IMHO a theme should indeed enhance and reflect its content, but the most important thing is content.
So pick a theme at random if you can’t decide (you can change it later) and start writing. Publish Posts.

AMEN to that. :)

Thank you so much for providing all of that useful information, @timethief and @justjennifer!
@susanryan0810: We don’t explicitly label any of themes in the WordPress.com repository as SEO ready/optimized. This is because all of our themes are reviewed by developers before they’re launched and we maintain high standards. As such, all themes in our repository are built in a way that makes it easy for search engines to discover and crawl content.
In addition, WordPress.com will automatically notify search engines whenever you publish new content and handles other behind the scenes mechanic of SEO on your behalf.
The above leaves you free to focus on the most important task, creating quality and consistent content. :)
@justjennifer made a really good point about picking a theme that suits your audience. If you let us know a little about what your site’s going to be about then maybe we can come up with some suggestions.
