Is support no longer available?
-
The instructions for Text Widget say, if your html code is being disallowed inappropriately, then “Contact Support” — it even gives a Contact Support link — but how does one contact support, when the link given only takes you to a place to ask the community for support? Is the community able to resolve issues about disallowed html code? (I’m a writer and I’m trying to add a link to my book on Amazon.) Is there a way to actually contact someone at WordPress?
Thanks for any insight into how one resolves issues of this nature.

Is the code any of these?
iframe, JavaScript, image affiliate links, advertising link
If it is the software will strip the code out. See here:

Amazon.com and other select affiliate links are now permitted on free hosted WordPress.com blogs, as long as they are not the primary content of the site in question.
WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert their own text affiliate links within post and page content only to their own products in Amazon or other third-party affiliate programs.
Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any affiliate links in widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.
This is the guide for creating links in posts and pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
This is the general link model:
<a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
Highlighted anchor text here1. Enter the anchor text you want to link to first.
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.

Thank you. Yes, the code supplied by Amazon begins with “iframe” — so I’m guessing that must refer to the the type of code.
The blog, which has been active since 2007, has vast amounts of information, so the link is FAR from being the primary content of the blog.
I’m not really certain what you mean by “Amazon affiliate links are permitted” if they’re not really permitted. I know how to add an ordinary link to a post, but as an author, I was hoping to add an affiliate link to my book. So is that simply not a possibility? (Ironic, since the only reason I was trying is that Illinois, after outlawing affiliate programs for a few years, just reversed the law.)
And can you explain what a “text affiliate link” is? Is that simply an ordinary link that is in a post? Because I’ve been doing those for years. Or is it an Amazon.com affiliate link within a post? (Not much point in that for an author, since it vanishes from sight as soon as there are a few more posts.)
Back in 2007, the Amazon.com affiliate program wasn’t an issue. I had a link on my blog until Illinois passed that anti-affiliate law. Sorry I didn’t know things changed at WordPress before I went to the trouble of signing up as an Amazon Affiliate. Sigh. Nothing is as easy as it looks.

Yes it’s a text link in a page or post.

Thanks.
So Amazon.com affiliate programs aren’t really allowed at all, then. Is that correct? Even though they’re clearly not the primary content.

Thanks, timethief. I’ll check it out.
I’m subscribed.
And I’m not impatient, just confused — and perhaps a little frustrated.

Amazon affiliate links are easy to use. You simply cannot use any ad, widget, carousel, or other dynamic code.
You can use a text link, or an image link. That’s it.
If you are trying to make an income via affiliate blogging, this is a non-optimal platform for just those reasons. You can’t use the “preview” code either. You can ONLY use a plain text or image link.

First of all, you have contacted WordPress.com support by posting here. :)
As far as affiliate links go, we recently started allowing all affiliate links, as long as they are within the context of a post or page and a site isn’t just a link-farm of affiliate sites or otherwise spammy in nature. You can include an affiliate link in your post text or link an image like a book cover.
Third-party advertisements are still disallowed, however.

Glad to know that this does reach support. A button that says you’re asking the community does not suggest that, but I’m glad to know it works.
As I noted above, my blog is 7 years old and packed with info — so definitely not a “link-farm” (good term, though — I’ve seen those).
Maybe this is a matter of definitions. Amazon gave me an affiliate link for my book, but it appears that you are saying it’s not really an affiliate link, it’s a third-party ad. So I’m not sure what you mean by “affiliate link.” Those words suggest to me the kind of arrangement Amazon describes — where I get a small fee from them for leading people to their site to buy my book. And yet, because it has “iframe” in it, it’s not allowed, so I’m guessing that makes it a third-party ad. So is it just Amazon’s affiliate links that you don’t allow? Or do you mean something completely different when you say “affiliate link” than they mean? Or is it only a problem when it’s in the side column? Can I ust the “iframe” code given to my by Amazon as long as it’s in text and not on the side?
Thanks for clarifying.

You can use the affiliate link from Amazon without any problem. You cannot, however, post a graphic or banner ad that constitutes an ad for Amazon.com.
