Is There a Better Way to Upload Files?

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog contains some posts that are designed to be long lists of files (.doc, .ppt) that can be shared like the page listed here: http://kitlynch.wordpress.com/2008/06/12/deca/

Uploading is slow and cumbersome, is there a way to upload more than one file at a time? Is there a better way to create a page/category/post thats purpose is simply to serve as a file resource list? All advice is greatly appreciated.

    1. You CAN upload several files at once: you can select them all together if they are all in a sequence in the same folder in your computer.
    2. You cannot INSERT more than one file links at once. But there’s a fast way to insert them: Just upload the files, don’t insert them in the post, then go to the media library; open a second window in your browser and go to the VISUAL post editor, drag&drop file names from library to editor.

I just tried this method with the Journalist theme and it did not work. By not working, I meant when I published the new post that contained the supposed images through drag-n-drop, the only items that appeared in the body were just the file names as listed in Media Gallery. Can’t think of what I might have done wrong here.

@shimworld: I tried it again using The Journalist, just in case (both 1.3 & 1.9), and it works. If you drag the image thumbnail, you get the (linking) thumbnail; if you drag the image name, you get that name as a link. (If you want the fullsize original, you must first click the thumbnail in the Media Library and drag the original that shows up.)

I don’t know what might have gone wrong in your case. Did you use the Media Library under “Manage” and not via the uploader? Did you drop the images in the VISUAL editor? And did you see them in the editor when you dropped them? (I don’t see why you say “supposed images”: if you don’t see them in the visual editor, you don’t get them in the published post either, of course.)

Also, I don’t know if it’s a browser problem: I’ve done this in Firefox and Safari; IE is unknown (and unwanted!) territory to me.

Ah got it right this time. The keywords: “Media Library under “Manage” and not via the uploader?” and “(If you want the fullsize original, you must first click the thumbnail in the Media Library and drag the original that shows up.)” cleared my confusion right up! To further improve this step, I now have the “Manage Media” window saved in my FF toolbar for quick access (this step reduces the number of clicks to get there).

    Thanks again!

    shimworld,
If you are dragging into html editor, it doesn’t work.
