Is there a bug in the Visual Editor?
-
This may be a good time to consider Windows Live Writer 2011 (officially released and free). Works incredibly well save for some quirks for new blog posts that involve a lot of pictures. It comes with picture effects/brightness/contrast/watermarking. Emoticons are cute but I’ve never tried inserting one so don’t know if it’s supported by WP.com

To ShimWorld: Yes, someone else is having similar — and additional issues — with their site (s) in Visual Editor, HTML editor, formatting, online presentation, appearance of theme Vigilance once updated and posted. Been online most of day with Customer Service and they are awesome!!! This has been going on now for over a week: images of WP toolbar fill my editor window with each touch of the scrollbar. It became worse after I logged into TypeKit and added one free font to my account only. I never added it any of my sites but it has sure appeared anyway, in select places.
Can’t take the stuff out, even in HTML editor. Killed the TypeKit account, explained why but their little pop-up button at the bottom of my site is still there, as are the fonts I don’t want, and where I never put them. Half my pages in Chapter 1 don’t present correctly. Have Vigilance on two other sites and all is well — so far, but the toolbar images have been an issue there also. This all started shortly after that major bug body slammed half the planet.
It’s an unholy nightmare. And, an hour ago, I popped into Blog.com (not Blogger.com) out of curiousity and to take out my frustrations on something, and discovered once you sign up, you are actually into a program Identical to WordPress in every conceivable way. In addition, I had not heard of them before, but when I signed in with my primary email, I was informed I already had an account. When I typed in the name of WP site I am having problems with low and behold the name appeared, the theme I am using appeared (several others on WP are also there, including our new ones). None of my journal pages were shown but I bet they are there somewhere. Same name, same theme, same editoral (no real Visual Editor), same layouts, one or two things different but otherwise, this site is a clone of WordPress through and through.
Even the same “policies” and “goal statements”. I was stunned.

Same crap showing up throughout my site!!!! Plus Andrew found instances of extra HTML: <div> at the beginning and end of one specific problem area and I found it all over the last 10 pages of my first chapter.
Peeved does not begin to express the frustration, nor does “frustration”. This is something really deliberate. I’m beginning to feel personally targeted.
What is the theme of your site? Mine is political.
I’d hate to think that another WP member is the issue, but I wonder since I had to totally revamp and switch another site on Child Abuse with WWII history comparisons, and have the same commenters on that site as well as the one I am now having trouble with, which is strictly political with WWII history and cross-references back in time. I need to believe that at least one of these individuals is not an issue, but I guess there is always that possibility.
Sorry to read you’re having the same issue. I hope neither of us do for much longer.

No one is targeting you, clear the CT out of your mind. The editor here is b0rked right now, has been ever since the release of wordpress core 3.0.1 as near as I can tell. Staff will get it fixed, no one is dying.

@markel: I have the same problem in my blog. And I haven’t captioned images. The visual editor inserts empty paragraphs all the times (the bug appears when I change the editing modes).
Have a specific post I can look at with this? I haven’t been able to reproduce it using anything other than a captioned image.
Or if you have steps I can specifically take to make it happen, that’s good too.
-
I don’t have steps to how it happened, but in my latest post, after the first image there is a persistent & nbsp ; .
If I delete it in html, switch to visual editor, it returns. In my test blog, I’d get a blank space after an image if I inserted styling for a paragraph or a table. But these were easily deleted and did not come back.

If I delete it in html, switch to visual editor, it returns.Yes. That is exactly what happens to me. Even without pictures (text only)

FWIW, I tried editing an old post from a year or two earlier, switched between HTML and Visual, Saved and the phenomenon didn’t occur. Seems to be happening to recent new posts.

I actually went to moxiecode’s site (the makers of TinyMCE editor) and all the issues I’ve seen with the editor (haven’t messed with the caption issue) are all in the base version of the editor. The issues that are of concern to me are in the copy/pasting of Word documents using the paste from Word icon. I have a couple blogs I help people with here, and several self-hosted blogs (authors) where they copy and paste from Word and this latest version of TinyMCE really mucks it up. (According to Lloydbud wordpress.COM switched to the latest version about a week ago.)
-
Yes, we switched to the most recent version (as did the currently development version of WordPress itself) about that long ago because the previous version was broken under IE9.
We’re aware of the “paste from” buttons not working properly and are doing what we can to help solve those issues from here.
-
Thanks markel, I’m right now working on some code changes to the self-hosted TinyMCE version to try and fix it.

This happens to me all the time, and even though I can to HTML and manually delete the ” ” that is for some reason inserted between each image and paragraph of text, it almost always comes back when I save the post again. It is extremely annoying and unnecessarily time consuming, especially on long posts with lots of images. Can WordPress not fix this?!
-
This is a bug in the open-source WordPress software (actually a problem with the editor used within WordPress). We have submitted a bug report on it; it just hasn’t been fixed yet.
-
thesacredpath, you’ve helped me a dozen times before and I’m glad you are “on this issue.”
Not to beat a dead horse, but this issue has also been happening to me whenever I insert a picture. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason. I’ve even noticed that when I go into the visual editor of previous post that were spaced fine, and then simply press “update” (with no changes save a word or two being made) and the pictures will have the
above and below.I’ve been able to fix it temporarily by going into the “html” editor (which, if possible would be magnificent if we could enlarge to full screen) and manually deleting these
statements. If it makes any difference, I am using Firefox v3.6.10 (which has been EXTREMELY buggy lately with other websites including Facebook, hanging and not responding).
Thanks for your help thus far, Markel, as a programmer and someone whose worked trouble tickets a number of years, I know how frustrating these things can be.
For what its worth, my blog is: http://www.unbreakablemanlaws.com although I believe I’ve (hopefully) corrected all of the issues.
-
Hey, all.
We just pushed a change that should solve this for you – please let us know if you are experiencing further problems with the non-breaking space thing.
-
Does this address the “paste from Word” issues as well?
Can you give me a specific example of something it’s messing up? I’ve tested with a bunch of stuff, but haven’t been able to get anything else to get messed up.
I don’t have Word, though (I use Pages and export when testing), so it’s possible I’m not able to hit on it.
The visual editor inserts empty paragraphs all the times when I change the editing modes.
Are you using any kind of styling I should know about? I need specifics in order to be able to reproduce the behavior and deliver a good report for fixing.
