Is there a “No further comments” option?
-
I have an old post which has been attracting a lot of comment spam. I would like to block all further commenting on this post, but I do not want to delete the good comments which are already there. Is there a way to do this?
If I disallow comments on a post, will that delete all the old comments?
Thanks!
Denise

you can turn off comments in old posts without deleting the present comments in them. just edit the post, look under ‘discussion’ in the sidebar, and check what applies.

Thanks! I was afraid to try that until I had asked. There is a long discussion under that post, and I didn’t want to lose it.

Shucks! That didn’t work. When I edited the post to not allow comments, they ALL disappeared. Luckily, when I went back and allowed comments, all 55 of them returned.
I still need some way to disallow NEW comments, but to keep the old. Any more ideas?

that’s strange, i have closed comments on an old post before without the comments disappearing. could it be due a theme-dependent factor? perhaps try changing themes and see if it works?

Hmm—I will have to experiment with themes, I guess. I started using the new Digg 3 Column theme last week, but this issue is important enough to make me switch again.
Which theme are you using that let you close the comments?
No more time to play this morning, but I will try a new theme the next time I have a chance…

err, i can’t remember. =) just test a random theme or two to see if closing comments makes the other comments vanish or not. then when it’s time for a change you may want to use those themes.
