Is there a selling template on WordPress?

I want to be able to tag items so people can select from a column on the left, the type of items they are interested in and the page will reload with those items. Does WordPress offer that feature?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

    Hi there!

It seems you are referring to the filters you can add for products.
In that way, the customer would be able to choose the product categories available in your store, and the page will show the items that match the criteria.

Because this filter would work on products, this is a feature offered by WooCommerce. You need to set up your store with it, and then you can use the Product Filter from the available widgets.

You can read this tutorial that shows how to create the filter, so you’d know what to expect: https://iconicwp.com/blog/how-to-use-a-woocommerce-product-filter-plugin/

Keep in mind that you’ll need to have a Business or eCommerce plan to add WooCommerce to your site, you can read more about it here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

And check this short introduction to WooCommerce: https://wordpress.com/support/introduction-to-woocommerce/

Let us know if you have further questions 😉
    Cheers!

Ah, so the term is ‘filters’. Great.
I wonder if I can get that filtration feature on something else then post it to the WordPress site. Would that be OK? It doesn’t sound complex.

  • I’m not sure what you mean by “get that filtration feature on something else then post it to the WordPress site”.

Would you please elaborate on that?

I meant that filters are a feature. If I could find another program that could put filters into a HTML document and load it up to the WordPress site would that be allowed?

  • Ah no, that wouldn’t work. You’d need to set up the filters on the WordPress end.

Are you sure? Have you tried it? How would the system know what features the document I uploaded contained? (I don’t even know how to produce filters….lol…but I suppose they are part of basic HTML?)

  • It’s not possible at all to upload an HTML document.

    So much for that idea…..
So is it possible to create a document with filtration in it? I don’t even know what kind of document that would be. Do you know? You create a list and each item is tagged. If the correct feature is clicked on the left column that item will appear. If its not it won’t. The same thing you see on almost every selling website now.

Originally I think this was called flat land organization. You can either put things in groups to organize them or tag all of them with different names. The problem with groups is you have to know which one will be in which group. People make mistakes. The other way shows everything initially then the reader hones down the stuff they know they are not interested in. Its by far the best way to find anything. Ebay really started this right from the start. They have always lead in this way enabling negative filtering in their search bar before anyone else major did it. Amazon did it for a while but now they’ve disabled it. By negative filtering I mean you put a dash in front of something to filter it. If I’m searching for a DVD and don’t want anything from the year 1990 I would search for:
    DVD -1990
and I’ll get all DVD’s except those from 1990.

Anyway honing/refining a search has always been the best way of reducing your results so its manageable and not missing anything.

  • Hi @whatever74, that feature isn’t currently built into WordPress itself, and I’m sure you’re aware HTML by itself wouldn’t accomplish that.

But if you’re handy with code, you could take an existing search and filter plugin, then make your own plugin to add the extra “negation” functionality you want.

I want to emphasize these aren’t developer forums, and we wouldn’t be able to assist with custom code. But we can point you to ideas. I know Jetpack Advanced Search might be a good place to start, and there’s an article on query customization here:

    Jetpack

Another option is to just have a developer write the code for you. We recommend Codable if you need help finding someone to hire.

    Hoping this helps!

Those were great recommendations. Thank you very much. So helpful. I had not thought of using the word “negation” to search with!
