Is there a social forum anywhere?

Just wondering…The wordpress community is so vast…shouldn’t there be a forum where people can interact “socially”? Or have I missed anything..?

this was dicussed previously and apparently the wordpress’s perspective is that there are plenty of social forums around the net so wp shouldn’t be doing a similar thing as we can go to those places should we want to socialise as such. there were quite some requests for a social forum, but not enough, i guess.

Old thread here; it’s not something the admins have ever shown any interest in. They have nothing to gain by encouraging wordpress.com users to talk to each other rather than spend the time posting on their blogs ;)

I’ve seen social forums work well in forging a community feeling (for example on the late lamented diary-x) but I suspect that wp.com is now probably too vast for them to be of much use.

I actually went ahead and set some up but no one really ever used them. They’re currently down as I deal with a domain registar who pulled the domain name (and 102 others we had registered for clients) saying that I was warehousing it.

There’s a number of threads where we had discussed it.

    Hope this helps,

    Here’s my two cents.
I *wince* at the thought of re-creating myspace here at wordpress.com. One can find wordpress.com bloggers with similar interest by using the tag page, tag surfer, and “my comments” because people interested in the same topics comment on one another’s blogs. And if you want to promote your blog you can do so here http://bestblog.wordpress.com/
The thought of an official worpress.com forum here for shallow socializing, rather than for technical support the way it is now makes me *shudder*.
Any blogger who wants to create this “groupiness” can simply apply for another blog for socializing and open the comments to one and all wordpress.com bloggers. It doesn’t need to be a forum and it doesn’t need to be official.
It’s my very strong preference that any social structure be built by bloggers on their own blogs through the establishment of commentary based on their blog content.

Myspace really doesn’t seem to have anyone controlling it or looking after what’s going on. I host a large number of scout troops who have online forums and I along with a number of volenteers there have an eye on them. Myspace is uncontrolled chaos pretty much but that’s a selling point for them.

Ezboard used to have a community centre where everyone from all the boards could go and chat, but they took it down in part because it was home to internecine fighting that would shame the Klingons, not to mention a degree of the old pervs-looking-for-kids thing.

I don’t support a social forum for just that reason; it ended up hurting EZboard rather than helping.

Hmmm…okay, you ‘ve almost convinced me it’s not such a good idea. Shame tho.

There are already any number of places where people can interact socially; I don’t think there’s a need for WordPress to reinvent the wheel just for WordPress users. Use Meebo, IM, or go to chat sites or social forums; god knows there are enough of them.

There was a Yahoo group going strong but not sure what every happened to them…
