Is there a theme that’s friendly with blocks but has a side bar
-
Hello,
I’m searching for a theme that is friendly towards the block editor, like Twenty Twenty is, where you can make a wide page with a lot of freedom of how it looks like, but that still has widgets next to the blog posts. Is there such a thing?
I want the freedom to have a few pages look in very particular ways (landing pages for projects) but at the same time most of my traffic goes straight to blog posts so I want to have a side-bar where I can showcase my more important projects there.
Thank you
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
It is on our roadmap to expand the use of the block model to include blocks as “widgets” as well as theme customization. But for the time being our fully block compatible themes do not have widget sidebars (widgets are present in the footer however) so for the moment there is not an option for this.
You may wish to follow our official blog, where we will announce any changes to how we handle widgets when we are ready to launch: https://wordpress.com/blog/
You can also follow the open-source project itself here: https://make.wordpress.org/design/handbook/focuses/full-site-editing/

Is there any sort of timeline for this? I really need to promote my upcoming book on my blog posts and I’m considering leaving wordpress.com to be able to do it, but I’d rather stay here.

Hi there,
There is no timeline. However, you can use another theme that has a sidebar. All themes in our library work with the Block editor.

I couldn’t find any theme in the library where I could do full-width pages other than Twenty Twenty (and that had a side bar for blog posts). So, yes, I can have a side bar to point to the landing page of my book, but then the page of my book is really bad, not a landing page at all.
Are you aware of any theme that has a side bar on blog posts and full width pages?

Sorry that is not an option at this time. The themes we have that offer sidebars were released before the launch of the block editor, so they will not work with “full width blocks” even though they do offer a “full width page template”
For example, this older theme does have sidebars on blog posts, as well as the option for full width pages without a sidebar, such as this theme:
https://darademo.wordpress.com/services/
However, you can see on that page that even though there is no sidebar, the content within the page (the image thumbnails) do not expand full width, but are limited by the inner margins of the page. These same margins prevent “blocks” from extending any further as well.
It would not be possible to add a full-width block to this kind of page and have it stretch beyond that. The block would be limited by the built in margins for the page, since this theme was never envisioned (at the time it was launched) to work with that kind of block.
