The trial upgrades have been discontinued. They may return again in the future or they may not.
You already have a free blog here http://jdelocacom.wordpress.com/ and you can use all the free features found at http://wordpress.com/features/ as well as those that are theme specific.

What part did you want to test drive?
If it is the CSS to change the look of your site – there should be a built in CSS preview that only you can see the changes for that should let you change the look a bit and see if you like it
To me the other things are either you want them or not (custom domain name, no ads, extra storage space etc.)

There is no grounds for actual comparison IMHO because wordpress.com is a turn key operation with off the shelf themes and only limited customization via an upgrade. On a wordpress.org install you can design sites and create themes, etc. free of charge. You cannot do that on a wordpress.com blog.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins (passwords), features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
