Is there a way of changing the preview picture of a WordPress post?

On the home page of a Word Press you see the posts and there is a picture accompanying it. I know I can change it by setting it as a featured image but it means it comes up as a background when you click on the post. Can I change the preview image of the post without setting it as a featured image?
