  Having discovered that ‘Categories’ and ‘Tags’ are two different things,
  I am now wondering –
  Is there a way to add tags to my posts without having to use the edit function please?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Sure! You can bulk edit your posts to add tags on the All Posts page. See here:
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit

  Your combined number of categories/tags shouldn’t go over about 10 or so, or your posts may be excluded from the Global Tags pages. http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/
