Is there a way to copy/duplicate a blog?

I do a group blog every semester in one of the university courses I teach. Is there a way I can copy over the theme, settings, widgets, heading picture (but not the posts/comments) when I set up the new blog for the new course participants each semester? It is a pain to manually duplicate the whole set-up every time. (I don’t want to simply delete the posts/content from the previous semester and re-use it, for various reasons.) Thanks for any help provided!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, there is not, but it can’t take more than an hour or two a semester. Aren’t you paid for that?

Hmmm – I’m paid to do many things – in fact, too many things. I could probably manage to accomplish a few of them if I used that hour or two for something other than manually re-doing the blog each semester ;-) But thanks anyway for the answer – at least I don’t have to wonder anymore if there might be an easier/better way …

But, wait – what if I create an export file of the old blog – and then import it to the newly created blog? (The site says: “This will contain all of your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus and custom posts.”) Would that save me any work? I guess I would have to delete the old posts and comments, but I could do that with “Bulk action”, right? If I just checked the export box for “Pages”, would I still get the custom fields, menus, etc – and just not the posts and comments? That would be even better.

Is the blog to provide help and material for your students?

You could set the old Post content back to “Draft” and then everything stays in the Post area just not visible – use the bulk edit feature to do many posts at the same time –

You could also do some sorting using Category’s

You could also export everything and import it to a Private blog – then copy material from the Private blog as needed back to your original blog for the students
